It depends how much stuff you have, I've done a couple of self moves when renting so not had to move a huge amount of furnature, if you have alot of furnature I would get removal men.
  • I'm hoping if we can get our parents involved and siblings thats 8 of us to do it :) Thanks for the advice guys!

How much things do you have? Especially bulky things.
Then how much would it cost to use removal men? Get quotes if you haven't.
How much would it be to hire a van? How much effort would it be to move yourself?

It's easier to make an informed decision once you have answer to these questions.
  • We've looked at hiring a van which is between £75 and £125.
When we moved last time, it cost us £30 but it was literally to move the fridge, the washingf machine and the dryer. Since then we've aquired a sofa, a massive bed, two massive desks, some really tall bookcases etc.

We're doing t ourselves. We got quotes, lowest £836! We have 3 bed house, packing ourselves, dismantling beds etc ourselves and bringing everything down from loft ourselves. No white goods. Moving 5 miles. it's just too much. We can hire a van for less that £200. (Big van)

I would never dream of doing it myself ever again. I get them in to pack too. Worth EVERY PENNY.

I have quite a lot of stuff. I have no intention of safely wrapping every plate, bowl, glass, spice jar, photo frame, tv, mirror, etc EVER AGAIN. Not in a million. I also have tonnes of books. I was packing for weeks and tbh it was very stressy having to do that after exchange around a full time job and social life! Plus I spent a bloody fortune in packing materials and hated hunting down boxes, most of them different sizes.

    Sheer hell.

I've moved most of our stuff myself over the last few weeks, but we're getting a local removals guy with a box van to do the furniture. One trip, £100.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind, but we moved ourselves several times until I hurt my back.

Eight years later, it still provides me with regular problems and chiropractor bills. It really isn't worth it. And the ease of having someone just do it when you've already got so much work to do before and after is just one less thing to worry about.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • It's all moe to do with that we've done it before ourselves. I figured the advantage with self move is we can move what we like when we want to. Do it more gradual than all the stuff in one go.

I like Gladgowdan's idea though. Maybe move everything but the big furniture and get a man with a vcan for that.

We're also in rented with a 10 day overlap, and are moving two streets down in the same village. For me, unless one is extremely hard up or has next to no stuff, professional removals are almost essential, not least for the reasons Doozergirl and Hazyjo states. Our removal company is staggering the move for no extra cost. It actually suits them too to do the garden, garage and sheds on one day then the main packing another day then the bulk of the move the day after that. They are being very flexible and it's costing less than £900 to pack and move a 3 bed house with lots of garden furniture and full garage (bikes, chest freezer etc) which I think represents excellent value especially versus my daily rate as a contractor myself.
