    Yorkshire Bank anyone?
Having had £250 promised, plus interest, from C & G today already it occurred to me that I may be due some more from previous mortgages.

Have found another £34 from Abbey National as I had paperwork going back to 1997 . Here's hoping they pay up without a fight......

But can't find paperwork related to a BTL with Yorkshire Bank in 1999 and 2004. Shot in the dark - don't suppose anyone knows what the redemption fees charged were?????? I could phone solicitor who redeemed mortgage but as they were as much use as a chocolate teapot when I was paying them I don't expect any help now. Plus, unless I can find 1999 paperwork it won't be any good.

WHERE IS THE PAPERWORK FROM 1999??????? AAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!! Need to sleep on it.....

    Halifax discharge fee
    Hi
Just phoned Halifax on their dedicated no. for mortgage disch. fees.
Got result straight away, just gave them my roll no. (the only documentation I had). They checked their records confirmed I had paid a disch. fee of £175. Told me that when I took the mort. out with them it was £40 and that I should receive a letter within 28 days confirming this and a refund of £135 difference!
All this took about 5 mins. thanks Martin!!

Woolwich success £235 in 2 minute call
    Who hoo !!!!!!
After complaining successfully about a Woolwich mortgage endowment and getting compensation last year I was a bit miffed when they refused point blank to accept that they should only charge me £50 as stated in the original T&C's.

Following this thread and Martin's recent newsletter it is apparent that the Woolwich opened a "We'll pay your money back immediately" line yesterday 08000 234180
Just rang them spent 2 minutes giving them details and a cheque is in the post for £225 plus £10.60 interest.
The This is money link above gives the position for each of the major banks and is excellent reading for everyone.

I am currently comming to the end of 5 year fix with Coventry BS (going to ING Direct, none of this nonsense with fees) after phone call they confirmed today the will stick by their (our!) original arrangement of £95 so they are sending me a letter confirming it will not be £195 which they now charge.
    Success!!!

Wrote to A&L last week, claiming £100, as the MEAF I payed was £295, original MEAF £195. Received the following letter today,

Also wrote to the woolwich claiming £45 from 2004, not yet heard anything. Tried ringing them on the number from one of the above posts, but they said they can't access my details at the moment, as they're not transferred onto the system yet (sounds like BS) & will ring back.

Why is it always that the Woolwich seem to drag their feet in such issues. I paid a £275 redemption fee with them last year with an original MEAF of £50 so a letter is being sent tommorrow and let's see what happens.

I swopped lenders about 2 years ago - so I wrote to my previous mortgage lender C&G re: refund. Within 2 days received a reply that the full amount would be refunded £225 plus interst of £24. Apparently when my original mortgage was taken out there was no exit fee - well it was 1989....... so far so good!!

You need to check the paperwork from Mortgage Express, both from when you took it out & remortgaged. There will be an exit fee or something similar quoted, compare this to the amount you were charged when you went to C & G. If you were charged higher you can claim back the difference, plus interest.

However, was mortgage with Mortgage Express (my turn to sound stupid now ) or were they brokers? If brokers it would be the actual mortgage company you would claim from.

Even if it's only £25 you should claim, if only as a matter of principle, nothing to do with the money of course (yeah, right ).

Let us know how you get on!!!

Hi, I am currently switching my mortgage from Halifax and I phoned and asked the what fee I would have to pay, They told me £225. Will they automatically help themselves to this or do I have to pay them direct? Also the mortgage states a fee of £100, when do I query? Sorry to sound thick but I havent got a clue!!

Thanks for this... just got off the phone to Woolwich. Very quick and easy. Just gave the account number and my name and address and they said they owed me £97 inc interest... Can't find all the paperwork to see if this is correct or not, so just accepted it!
    Easy money.
Ah! Good old trusty beer... I hope you never change.

    Hi,
I remortgaged from halifax to nationwide in november 06. Exit fee £175. Called Halifax yesterday stating how unreasonable charge was and within a couple of hours i had a call back stating i will get a full refund.
Many thanks to Martin and all those who make this site possible.

thanks to chivers1977 for that message, had a nightmare time redeeming my mortgage in Dec 2005/Jan2006 due to incompetence in my local branch of the Woolwich and during that time the redemption fee went up from £195 to £275. I queried it at the time but they insisted I pay it to redeem my mortgage and then they mislaid my deeds. Got £110 in interest repaid to me but am now determined to get the redemption fee back from the £50 I signed up for so £225 - worth having! Thanks to all these useful threads.

    Halifax Mortgage discharge fee
    Hi Martin & team.
Just rang the Halifax. Discharge fee in '97 was £40 and then £175 when I moved in '05. Told that I should recieve a cheque for the difference (£135) in the next 28 days. All done in a 2 minute phone call!
Thanks for the heads up. Keep up the good work

Phone Abbey today concerning exit fee paid in April 2006. (£225.00). I was informed that they have made no decision and will not until 28th February. They asked me to write and they will aknowledge in 8 working days and give a written answer after 28 days. I will now write and tell them that I will expect interest if they are going to prevaricate in this way.
