Personally I wouldn't be without my Garmin sat nav. I hate having my phone as a sat nav as it ends up getting other notifications, calls etc whilst driving. I also don't like the battery impact of running the phone as a sat nav.

I used to have an iGo system built into my car and was utterly convinced that it blew Google Maps away.

Since switching to Google Maps, they're really neck and neck, except Google has none of the inconvenience and ballaches when iGo goes wrong.

I think search references only work for the person who made the search. (If I follow you link I get "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.").

What exact search terms did you use?

But you can plug it into the in car charger to resolve that problem?

I have an in car satnav and think it so useless I now use google maps on my phone and don't have a battery or data problem. The only cost was buying a holder to fit into the air vents (don't trust the suction ones to retain their suction for long!)

Check on the matter of Lifetime Map Updates.
Tom Tom has just abandoned theirs.
    Will Garmin follow?

Never having used Tom Tom, I can say without fear of contradiction that Garmin is the better!

Tomtom have only stopped offering map updates for older units which can’t handle the data.

Garmin will follow suit for the same reason.

And how do you stop the wear on the battery from overheating when driving in direct summer sun and charging at the same time?

Also do you not find all of the notifications get in the way somewhat?

Mine never gets hot when using as a satnav and connected to the charger. If it's summer and the sun is shining the A/C is running....
Modern batteries are able to take it.
Pointless having a smart phone if you don't use it to it's full potential.

  • I have been using waze on an iPhone 7 and it has been superb. You can buy a 5.5 inch mobile for circa £100 and have a multifunction Satnav/phone that will have lifetime free updates. Standalone satnavs are all but dead.
