Ha I love the way you carry around money but don't like to buy others drinks. I end up getting halfway through the night, very drunk and end up spending all my money on buying others drinks. Crazy.

Would like to know people's thoughts regarding pros and cons to renting or buying property. I still feel it is a topic for debate.

I have always taken the view that if you can afford it, its best to buy. After all when you're renting you are paying off someone elses mortgage, you might as well pay your own.

Ha ha - Lokolo, that sounds just like me! ;) It's been a crazy months, but I think my spending is just about to calm down.......

Big news is - I got engaged! :D So I now have a wedding to save for, which means I'm quite excited about saving with a bit more dedication - always helps to have a goal in mind!

At the moment I have £1300 saved (a pittance compared to some I know - but hey, everyone has to start somewhere....).

I'm starting back uni this month, so that was intended as a wee bit of a cushion in case I can't keep on my part-time job throughout the course, but my small goals for now are:

    1. To increase the savings to £2k (again not a lot, but I'll be surviving on a part-time wage and student loan for the next year - so won't have much "disposable" income)
    2. To leave my savings untouched throughout my course.....

We've started to get some cash through as engagement pressies - so I need to hunt out a joint savings account for us that doesn't require a joint current account - anyone any ideas?

    xx

Congrats again crapwithmoney, a wedding is a very good motivation for saving I am sure!!! :D

My savings have almost reached the £27,000 mark and I am awaiting my £50 from NatWest any day now! I should be on track for £30,000 by the end of the year (it would be more but I have a few hols/weekends away coming up and also a few birthdays - but am trying to be MSE with pressie - everyone I know is going to be getting those Body Shop beauty cases, even the men! :rotfl:).

My short term aim is to pare back my budget as much as possible and keep discretionary spending to a minimum - well, I will insist on going on holiday but that is my priority, rather than buying a load of consumer crap. :o

My target for 2010 is another £10K to bring me up to (gulp) £40K, I reckon can do it! That (possibly coupled with OH's savings) should make a nice house deposit. I never thought I could save that much and I am always tempted to move to SE Asia and live the high life (£40K would do me for about 15 years over there) instead of 'wasting' it on a semi-d in suburbia! :rotfl:

Good to see everyone's updates, well done all of you. I love this thread, it's an inspiration!

Ha well done on getting engaged. But you get engagement presents?? So you get presents for getting engaged, then presents for getting married? O..k.. I find that a little odd lol.

I get paid on Thursday woo. Had payslip. Only problem is, I've already spent more than I allocated on budget, thanks to a Tim Minchin concert and football shirt that I really wanted....

If I cut back in petrol I might be able to counter it but I won't do by much :(

Need to start being stingy damnit.

Lokolo, engagement presents are quite normal! :D I would normally spend about £20-30 on an engagement gift, which is less than I'd spend on the wedding gift. I haven't given money before tho, maybe that's more of a family thing? Not sure.

Thanks Lokolo! - And Tara :D You're right Lokolo, I was quite surprised by the gifts, I'd thought we'd only get them if we had a party, which had put us off having one - but people are have been so generous anyway that we're thinking we should probably just have one! And Tara, yeah it's family who've given us money - I expect it's because we're not planning on getting married for a while maybe?

Good news on the first pay Lokolo! I'm sure you'll spend it (or not) wisely! ;)

Tara :T on the savings! You really do amaze me!
