Hi

About 6 or 7 years ago my sisters partner was able to claim his single mans tax back as he had been bringing my sisters daughter up for 6 years, does anyone know if this is still possible to do or if it has been scrapped?

He was paying tax as having no dependants for years as my sisters daughter wasn't his, then someone mentioned to him that he could claim it back because he'd been bringing her up as his own and they were due to get married, so he put his claim in and got about 2,500 back.

Tax is paid on the basis of your own income, it has nothing to do with any dependents. It sounds like it may have been some benefit that was claimed, but these can only usually be backdated 3 months.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I think she might be talking about the former married man's tax allowance which no longer exists. There was also another tax break relating to children which was replaced by Child Tax Credit but I don't remember much about it as my OH claimed that.

Zoe - How long are we going back?

There used to be a married mans allowance, but single persons with children could also get the same equivalent tax break. Both my SIL and an ex-workmate claimed it when they became single mums.

The married mans allowance ended in April 2000. A year later the Childrens Tax credit came in and went through the tax code of the wage earner. This ended in April 2003 when the Child Tax Credit came in.

If you're not sure, why don't you ring you tax office?

It does sound like it was the original child tax credits, which were paid as a reduction on the tax paid. The system has chenged and they are now paid alongside working tax credits.

It was about 6 years ago, so it probably is as you said and ended in 2000.
    Thanks for the replies anyway.

The allowance was called the Additional Personal Allowance and was given to unmarried people with children one allowance no matter how many children you had. It was worth exactly the same as the married Allowance. It was possible for partners to claim an allowance for children that were not their own as long as they were maintaining/living with them and no-one else was making a claim. It is gone for good now!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
