How to handle a flooring man
bundly

I had a vinyl flooring fitter round to give me a quote.
The FIRST thing he said to me was, before measuring or even looking at the job: "This is going to cost you quite a bit, you know."
After measuring he added: "Bathrooms are very fiddly. It takes me ages to make a template to go round the pedestal and the loo, and then the hardboard has to be cut, and then the vinyl. We are looking at a big job here, and so it will be quite a lot of money".
I did suggest that he could save a lot of time by using the existing vinyl and or hardboard as a template, but he said no, he liked to make his own.
He wasn't even able to give me a per metre or a per hour quote for the job. He just kept fudging when I asked him for a price, even a "ball park" price, saying "It isn't going to be cheap, if that is what you are thinking ..."
So he has gone home to contemplate just how much he can charge me.
Can anyone give me some advice on what I "ought " to be paying per square metre for fitting ordinary cheap vinyl in an ordinary house?
Cheers

Its academic what we think. You have come to your own conclusions on your other 2 posts so its pointless us trying to assist.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

If its going to be that fiddly and that expensive then it may be more worthwhile to do the job properly and remove the basin/pedestal and WC pan first. That way there's no faff cutting around them and the best bit is . . . . your floor is well protected from spills and suchlike. :-)0

Fitters usually have a per square metre price, with a minimum charge (they're not going to come out to a job that's only a couple of square metres for the square metre price, eg. a small utility). Don't bother with this fitter, he sounds awful.
Just checked what our local fitters charge -
£3.50 per square metre, £40 minimum charge (just vinyl)
£6.50 per square metre, £65 minimum charge (vinyl and hardboard)Bulletproof0 -
Don't handle him at all. Get a quote from someone else.0

This is very useful knowledge to have - just what I was hoping for when I posted this.
He did tell me that his minimum charge was £78.30p, but that my job would attract a far bigger cost.

The joke is, he's the only man in my town who is listed on the website of approved fitters by the http://www.nicfltd.org.uk
I also didn't realise to what extent the carpet shops have the business sewn up. I've been through the local paper, the Friday-Ad, and there is only one flooring fitter listed. I also asked the guy who works for the local carpet shop to moonlight and do a cash in hand job for me at the weekend but he said he would get the sack.

We all come to our own conclusions in the end, Phill. The point of these advice boards is to become more knowledgeable on the subject, so that we are better informed when we reach our own conclusions.
Nobody on here is a puppet, after all :-)0 -
Ignore that website, that just means he's paid to be on there. Most fitters don't bother with it.
Most fitters are self-employed and pick up work from various shops. The shops (well, the independants anyway) often have business cards of fitters, just ask or look at their pinboard. Yellow pages? Word of mouth is best though, find out who fitted friends/relatives flooring.Bulletproof0 -

Yes, I fear you are right <sigh>.
I'm trying word of mouth by posting appeals for a carpet fitter on all my local Facebook and Yahoo groups. And yes, I can try Yell.com.

I have now got a flooring man recommended by a local carpet shop. He's coming tomorrow. It will be curious to hear whether he, too, sucks his teeth and warns me that this is going to cost me an arm and a leg.
