An acquaintance has received a letter from Equifax telling her that her personal data has been accessed and attaching information of people to contact like Action Fraud UK Finance CardWatch) National Crime Agency. I Haven't seen the letter but she's getting the impression they want her to join up to Cifas Protective Registration.
Is this a scam? How do companies like Equifax know that personal data has been accessed unless the affected person specifically tells them? Do banks inform credit agencies like tEquifax if they have experienced a data breach? I don't know how best to advise her.
