I've just added an extra direct debit to our main account, for convenience and in case I need one for a new account.

If you wish to transfer a direct debit between banks (not an account switch) do you make the request to the receiving bank , the one currently paying or the company that is being paid ?

    The company.
Often this can be done online.

This can also sometimes be done in branch if you are just switching the DD from one account to another within the same bank.

Otherwise it is done by calling up the company and giving them the new account details

Sure? How will the originator (company) know about the change?
Theoretically, this can be done by old-fashioned partial switch, but in this case it can be a different bank, not necessarily the same.

It's some form of internal re-direct. I believe FD (and maybe therefore HSBC?) are known to offer the service. I have a vague recollection Santander can also offer it?

Oh dear, so I have to inform the company.

This could go wrong as one of the DDs is for council tax and our council aren't very good at getting things right....unless it's wasting our money.

and don't forget- you can have DDs for 12 payments rather than 10 with council tax.(Most of them hide this info in teeny print.)
Comes in handy if you need DDs to go out every month.

There shouldn't be a problem with changing a DD. You just say you have a new / different bank a/c- must happen all the time!
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Ours has quite large print, probably because they are desperate to grab our money.

I fell foul of the 10 months DD on water, last year, only finding out when the Co-op didn't pay out although we had enough DDs. (A check showed no DD for water that month)

Luckily Severn Trent are helpful and redistributed the payments so we paid every month.

PS: I've just realised that we haven't had the water rates statement for the coming year and must check on it, as you have to opt into 12 instead of 10 payments, each year, as DD reverts to 10 payments. (Luckily I have a handy £5 DD to Tesco savings which will cover for any failures, which would lose the £4 bonus.

There is a button on the computers which allow you to switch DD between accounts, the originator number remains the same although the account number differs.

Its not a switch as the existing account remains open, its just the DD that are moved across.

Things could go wrong what ever you do. Do remember that it is the company that triggers a DD "pull", so they have an incentive to do it right.

Never had a problem, either online or on the 'phone. In the latter case, pointing out that you've cancelled the original DD incentivises the most sluggardly organisations. :)
