3-6 Month Emergency Fund Challenge!! 20th Oct 15 at 8:30 AM
    Morning Everyone....

I have been wondering for MONTHS now about what would happen if there was some kind of Emergency....I am self-employed and also starting a new Business which will also be on a self-employed basis....so I will never get holiday pay or sick pay....although I AM hoping to maybe get an employed Job but that would only be for a couple of days a Week so it won't cover me completely if something were to happen....

My health is not wonderful at the moment, and hasn't been for a while, but I'm going to start trying to lose Weight once I've moved Flats (which I'm doing this Weekend!!).

So the point of this Challenge is to save up at least 3 month's worth of wages....that can be a different amount for each person....and some people might want to save up to 6 months if they are feeling ambitious!!

Me personally, I want to save 3 months worth of wages which for me will be 6000.

Now, there is ABSOLUTELY NO TIME LIMIT on this Challenge...in fact I suspect it could take me Years to get to the point of having 3 months wages as Savings....For now I can only afford 5 per week but as my new Business builds up (hopefully!!) then I should be able to afford more.

This Thread is mainly for us all to encourage each other to keep on Saving and to celebrate when we reach milestones, however large or small they may be.....Like for me, when I get to having 500 I will be ecstatic!!

I also wanted to say that if at any time an emergency crops up and you need to use your Fund and then start again then please don't worry about doing that.....It's what the Emergency Fund is there for after all....

I don't like having Savings in the Bank as I get too tempted to spend them so I'm going to invest in a Terramundi to put my Savings into at least at first......but other's may choose to use their Bank Accounts or a Tin from Poundworld...or stuff it under your Mattress!!

Sooooo.....Here we go.....I'll add the names below as people Join....xXx

    Hi Dreamer Helen,

I'm doing the 1000 EF but would like to do this too if that's OK. I've been frantically saving for a new car for a while now, which I will need in time but at the moment my car is OK so its there for when that time comes. I add to it each pay day.

My plan is to keep ploughing into it until I have 6 months wages to start with but if I have to take it for my car then that's fine too, and just plough on after the car. It will be a bit of a multi purpose fund.

My target......... 8700 balance after the car

    Please add me DH.

Btw, for those not in the know, a Terramundi is a clay pot with a slot in the top into which you drop your lose change.

If you want to be really MSE, then you could try making one out of papier mache if you save all your junk mail and newspapers.

    Hi DreamerHelen

Please can I join this lovely new challenge? Having been made redundant twice before I have known for ages that I need to have this "employment buffer" but it's one of those things you hate to dwell on.... until it's too late!

So, I will aim for the 3 months first and then push on to 6 - it may take some time!

    Where do I sign...?

Ok so first update here for the car/ 3 - 6 month EF #2 and it's a grand total of 4454.43/8700 aka 51.2%

Signature updated ready, I've been working on it for a few months so feel like a bit of a cheat, not starting at zero.

    Hiya.

    This is a great idea.

I had a similar realisation when my brother was told he might be made redundant (thankfully they redeployed him to another job). I suddenly realised that if either myself or my partner lost our jobs then we would lose everything.
We have no emergency fund at all. It was quite an eye-opener as it was something I had never considered before.

Could you add me in at number 8, if possible (lucky number)?? I won't be starting straight away as am currently fighting my credit card debt with every penny I have but will start this in January if that is okay??
Love the idea of another challenge after getting rid of the debt.

Step one is just for 2000 (starting small). This is just to give us a baseline emergency fund as we don't have one at all.

Once we have this then I will continue saving until we have as much as we can saved.
I will class our 3 month goal as 6000 as we need 2000 jointly a month to keep us going. I would hope that both of us don't lose our jobs at the same time but this would at least keep our bills paid if the worst was to happen.

But first off... aiming for 2000 from January 2016.

Good luck to everyone else and thanks for a great challenge idea dreamer helen.

Sophieo16 don't worry, my EF will be going up very slowly as well....It's not about how long it takes, just that we all get there in the end....

Stewby....no problem....Have added you in as Number 8 and put your Goal as 2000....I know you can do it!!

I haven't got my Terramundi yet but I'll be putting 5 aside this morning (when I've been to the Bank) for this Emergency Fund....

Good luck with the move DH - I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

Don't forget to pack the 'kettle' or 'refreshments' last so they are on the top for unpacking

Hi Dreamer Helen, would you add me please? I think it'll take me ages too! In monetary terms 3months would be 7800, 6 months would be 15600 to cover mine and my wife outgoings!

I've never focused on saving before so will concentrate efforts on Patman99 1000 EF challenge as my priority then getting rid of CCs and loans! So other than a nominal deposit to open this saving fund account it will definitely be a slow process.

To start me off I've decided to try the 10 a day challenge, plus putting 2 coins in a terramundi my gorgeous wife bought me two years ago!!

    Morning! And Happy Friiiiidaaaaaaay!!

I've just realised my new saver is open for this challenge so I've put 30 in there to kick me off.

Not much, but it's better than looking at a zero balance!
