Making savings before it's too late

I decided to do a full audit of all our expenditure over the last 12 months. This was prompted by the realisation that, although we're still in the black, our savings are much reduced compared to this time last year. I really wanted to know the answer to the age-old question - where does it all go??

As a result of a lot of number crunching and general faffing on, the end result is a list of things that we need to do next year to ensure that our savings don't disappear completely and we end up in the red. I thought I would share it on here. And if anyone has any better ideas...

- stop having hair dyed. I started to go grey at 19. Now that I'm 57 I've decided to embrace the grey. This will save about £400 a year.
- reduce gas and electric usage. We'd got a bit lazy and had it on 24/7 - now it's off from 10pm until 5am (we're up at 6). And the gas fire doesn't go on until the evening.
- check that we're with the best supplier. We weren't!! Looks like there are substantial savings to be had.
- I was already an Aldi convert, but tended to go to our nearest supermarket (Sainsbury's Local) for top-up shops. Aldi is only a little further away, so will make the effort.
- make sure we're using the cheapest fuel locally. We'd got into a habit of always going to the same place, but it turns out it wasn't the cheapest by quite a long way.
- shop around for the best deals on connectivity - I always feel ripped off by mobile/broadband etc anyway, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if we can get the same deal for less. This is OH's specialist subject, so hoping for significant savings.
- PayPal. OH seems to have a bit of a PayPal habit. It's hard to say what exactly we've been buying via PayPal, and I'm sure it was all a bargain, but nevertheless an awful lot of money went that way. Needs to be brought under control.
- cash. I think I very rarely use cash - most spends, even quite small ones, go on the credit card so that I get the cashback. But still, the amount of cash we withdraw seems a lot. Next year I'll start keeping a record of it.
- buy less wine!!!
- keep track of the (monetary) gifts we give to the kids. They're all grown up now, all in reasonably well paid employment, and generally heading in the right direction. We need to learn that they don't need us!!
- keep a lid on what we spend on holiday, particularly on meals out. The last time we were away, we had every meal out apart from breakfast. Some were just snack-type lunches, but even so - it all mounts up. There's no reason why we can't buy some nice bread, some local cheese and some fruit and make up a picnic.
- have fewer take-aways. We actually don't have that many, maybe one a month - but it would be cheaper to keep a few Chinese-type starters etc in the freezer. And probably quicker than waiting for a delivery!!
- keep an eye on best before dates - again, I'm pretty good at this, and I wouldn't chuck something out just because it was after the best before date. But still, things need to be used!
- use up the alcohol we already have!!
- tumble dry everything in one load. I do a dark wash and a light wash, which is fair enough - but there's no reason why they can't go into the tumble dryer together (I dry them overnight on the radiator first, so the tumble dryer is just finishing them off).
- reduce waste - what are we throwing away?
- cancel the Santander credit card - it was worthwhile when we got the full cashback, but now that it's capped at £3 per category, the max you can get is £9 - and there's a £3 fee to take off. So - we'll use the Asda card for everything (0.5% cashback on everything, or 1% on spends at Asda, and no fee).
- for things I can't get at Aldi, go to Asda to take advantage of the 1% cashback, and also the cheap fuel.

That's the list so far. It'll be interesting to see where things stand next year at this time. Fingers crossed.

    Some good ideas there trailingspouse.:)

Personally I wouldn't want to cut back on my hairdresser. Fortunately I have very little grey but a good cut and my highlights make me feel good and compared to my mother's generation who used to have a weekly shampoo and set I think it's a bargain!:D

I like the occasional Indian or Chinese as a break from cooking from scratch but have long preferred a supermarket ready meal as, not only is it far cheaper, but it's piping hot when I get to eat it! I can recommend Aldi's Lamb Rogan Josh and DH likes the chicken jalfrezi. The pilau microwave pouches are easy too.

Most of your spending on cards and Paypal will be easily tracked but I'd recommend a spending diary for the cash as well or just keep receipts. Try it through January and then you can review and see where you've bought needs rather than wants.

    Good luck.:)
  • Good idea to have an end of year audit: I also wonder where it all goes! I will take a leaf out of your book and crunch some numbers to see where the waste is. I have stopped working, for health and sanity reasons, and am using my inheritance, supposedly for treats and to top up OH's small salary, until I get my state pension in July -( I am one of the unlucky women of a certain age who have had their pension age moved twice: am I bitter? You bet your sweet bippy I am! A friend six months younger than me has been receiving hers for two years )
OH is currently signed off work and is getting really stressed about going back next year . He is applying for another job which will mean a change from a small salary to a very small one, so if the inheritance is to be there to add a few luxuries in our retirement, savings need to be made.

I like your list, all very sensible. It's a good idea to do a review of spending. I'm not going to give up on my hair colouring though, it would only save me £3 a year, 3 x £1 box from a shop. I have hardly any grey, but I like to lighten it a touch, dark hair doesn't suit me.

    Awesome list.

The only thing I'd tweak is maybe aim to not use the tumble dryer at all in the spring and summer - assuming you have somewhere outdoors you can hang your washing, of course.

Oh, and I also recommend a spreadsheet to track every penny that passes through your hands.

I get my DH to colour my hair at home; might be an option if you find you don't like embracing the grey after all.

    Great list.

I did a recent audit and the result was.....”could do better”. :rotfl: I have no debts but this year I haven’t been as efficient as I could have been. I’ve definitely let things slip.

So that’s my plan too for next year. To run a tighter ship, rein in the spending and save more.

I have signed up for the £2018 in 2018 challenge. To reach this I am going to try a combination of reducing expenditure and hopefully making a bit of extra money on the side......perhaps carboots, eBay etc.
  • Re the hair - I've been thinking about going grey for a while. I'd missed a cut, and so my hair was really quite long (I keep it really short normally) - so rather than just getting it done my normal colour, I asked her to cut it first, just to see what it would look like. And I liked it!!

A happy meeting of vanity and economy!!

I'm also going back to a full inventory, I did it for a year a few years back when doing the 4k a year challenge now there is really only DH&I at home mostly ( I do still have the youngest doing the hotel thing at the mo) I need an updated list as I found my store is out of kilter, as I tend to buy non perishables for the year when on offer and buy them off myself when needed.

How does that work? It sort of sounds like you're buying them twice??

I stopped colouring my hair this time last year and love the sparkly highlights I have now and it looks far better with my complexion. I was only using home dyes but at £5 a box and doing it every 6 weeks, it did add up.

If you pop your washing machine on for an extra spin it will come out a lot drier and will dry on an airier over night (jeans might need an extra few hours) - I dry outside during the spring summer and autumn but this time of year a load gets done in the morning, straight on the sorer and I fold it and put it away the following day. We only have the heating on for an hour in the mornings and maybe 2 hours in the afternoon if it’s cold enough. We do have an open fire which we Light of an evening.

Phones - we brought second hand handsets and have a £5 a month unlimited calls and texts contract with enough data to see us through. We don’t upgrade, if the phone dies and isn’t repairable then we will buy something similar, Again 2nd or 3rd hand.

There’s lots of savings to be made and you’ve made an excellent start by keeping such a close eye on things.
