Is there a recommended Claims management company?

I don't have much paperwork and I suspect I only had PPI with Littlewoods many years ago. I don't have patience to hunt down all my closed accounts to find out if I had PPI. So it's a claims company or I'd probably give up but is there a preferred company?

That is a bit like asking what the shiniest turd is. However, I think you don't understand what a CMC does. They do not hunt down what you have paid. They can check your credit record (just as you can free and easily using noddle) and that will show the last 6 years credit history. Some will check land registry to see what secured loans you have had. However, that is it. Beyond that, your data is not in the public domain. They need you to tell them.

I was under the impression that you give them permission to track down past accounts on your behalf using that data & check if you've paid PPI.

If I have to start filling in forms unfortunately I already know I won't.

No, you give them permission to "represent" you in PPI complaints; for which they charge fully a third of anty redress awarded (plus VAT).

Form filling is done only by you..

Really, So what's the point of them then?

I can see why so many don't bother to claim. I saw HSBCs claim form and that put me right off. Let alone trying to track down other accounts I've had in the last 6 years.

Many people that have been mis-sold PPI are very easy marks to be mis-sold again. They can make out that it is so much effort and they will do all the work. In reality, it takes very little to complain and the process is painless.

When you have a solid nailed on complaint reason, you dont need to use that sort of form. It is used for people that dont know if they were mis-sold or not.

I suspect I paid PPI but I don't have much if any paperwork and I was an unemployed student at the time so it would have been useless.
I guess I'll have to knuckle down and write letters.

PPI firms don't know your data as it's not publicly available, just write to or ring any firms you think you had finance with and ask
