The point being - subjectively it was a £500-600 car, but to the right man its worth more.

Spot on.When I was young I would have loved a project like the OP's MX5. Indeed, at the age of 18 in 1964 I bought a 1937 MG TA for £80, rebuilt it (cars were much easier to work on in those days - it was like Meccano) and had a lot of fun in it. Insurance was £11.0s.0d a year (for a teenager!). I'm too old now, and would rather pay someone else to do the work. Perhaps kids don't have the time or the expertise these days, or just that cars are too complicated.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Don't think you'll get response from OP - He seems to have sold the vehicle and got himself a new car.

What has he got to replace it? :)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I sold the car at the weekend for £600, in case anyone was wondering. The fact it has a few custom modifications is what sold it to the buyer.
Thanks for the advice from everyone, especially motorguy.

I ordered the new car about a month ago. Only started selling the MX-5 a couple weeks after I had placed the order on the new car.

Fiesta ST, it's coming next week and I can't wait :) hopefully it's almost as fun to drive but it's a lot more practical. and it is brand new so not going to go wrong.

Fingers crossed you are right :p

Good price for the MX5 as well :D

Does the top come off a Fiesta ST?

Just don't forget to tell your insurers about any mods you put on it, cos they will find out ;)

There is a reason new cars come with a manufacturers warranty.

I can live without the soft-top. I mostly drove with the roof up, like a coupe, and preferred it inside that way. Yeah it's nice on a warm sunny day, and other times it is still nice to get fresh air, but it's something I can live without.
