Have a look at Screwfix there's a security bit set for £4-99.

There are none in there for that screw.

Can you just cut / grind a slot in it?

Small pilot hole in top of screw and use a screw extractor, extractor set from screwfix are £3.50 ish plus correct size drill bit

Just looked at my old Kenwood toaster, it has the same screws and I used thin nosed pliers to undo them, they were not very tight.

message to the OP, i know this is an old thread, but i am having the same problem and wanted to know what you ended up using and which one worked. i wish i found this link before I made my buy for a screwdriver set, but if you hurry and answer then maybe i can cancel my order - get my money back and order what you got to work. thanks.

What price is the toaster? Is it actually worth trying to repair?

It's probably been thrown away by now.
