Travel Insurance With An Ill Family Member At Home

We are due to travel to Spain in June 2018. We have recently learnt that a close family member, who is not in the travelling party, has kidney failure and perhaps does not have long to live. Of course, we still want to go, but if said family member is really not very well, or if they happen to take a turn for the worse whilst we are away, would a travel insurance policy cover us having to curtail our holiday? Or even having to cancel it? Would I need to contact an insurance company direct to explain the situation?

We knew of his health issues when we booked, but he has recently got slightly worse and we are fearing the worst. We don't currently have insurance, but we are looking to get something in place now.

Any advice is appreciated.

Now that you know about the condition you would have to declare it when taking out a new insurance policy. It is likely that cancellation/curtailment if your family member becomes more unwell will not be covered because it's pre-existing to the policy being taken out.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

You have no chance now of being covered for anything to do with your family member,

Even if you had got insurance when you first booked its more than likely not to be covered either .

Get your insurance anyway, you stiil need it for other things.
But if tge worst happens it would be on your shoulders as to wether you cancel or not , you would not have a claim.
But in any event, you should always take out insurance more or less at the same time as booking a holiday
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    No.

You don't have to "declare" the health issues of any non travelling person when applying for travel insurance!

(You just cannot make any claim related to this existing condition of the non travelling person)

As already advised, OP, you need your travel cover in place now! (And accept you won't be able to make any claim in respect of any costs involved over cancellation/curtailment due to the existing condition of the non travelling family member)
