Caliper nipple

Hi all

I changed my caliper to evo 9 and 350 disc in dec

One of the calipers was leaking from piston so took it off and rebuilt it today

Car was off road for 6 month plus and caliper was in a box

When i was rebuilding today, i opened the two bleed nipples and noticed the thread coming off with it

Did some googling and think it is to do with galvanised rust( sorry if that is not the right term)

Bottom line is, it is leaking and can't put the nipples back

It is an m10 x 1.0 so bought both helicoil and tap and die for it

I want to try and tap it first and if that fails then drill next size up and helicoil

Question i have is, if existing thread is gone, is there any chance the tap works?

I guess if there is no metal then it can't tap or re create the thread

I then thought of taking it to someone to weld it and drill it again but not sure if they will up the bleed hole or not

What would you do ?

I am so angry and annoyed and think the issue happened due to no brake fluid been there so the bolt freezed

I think the typo is evidence of your issue. Hope stripped for the caliper. As you have guessed you cannot tap what isn't there and going to a bigger size would require redrilling and they you would need to get the right sized bleed nipple to fix.

Can you trade in your caliper for a professional rebuilt one?

Is there a machinery service or professional people who can weld the hole and re drill it?

    I am refering to fabricators

If drilled and helicoiled or rethreaded, the new thread would have to be extremely accurately square with the tapered seal inside the hole, or itll never seal, plus any swarf left behind would stop the seal working and/or find its way to the piston.

I had the same problem as you.
The issue occurs usually on rear calipers as they're made from alloy and the bleed nipples are steel so the two metals combined creates galvanic corrosion.

I replaced the caliper as anything else wasn't worth the headache.

This is the right way forward.

That's when you would drill and retap to M12.

Nope. The thread shouldn't be in contact with fluid anyway, so it'd make no difference. The seal is made by the tip of the nip in contact with the seat, below the thread.

Were these calipers new, reconditioned, used?

    It was used caliper

Question is , do fabricators weld and redrill?

I don't want to heli coil it

Also if you helicoil then the nipple may not sit in the right place and hence no seal

Then just buy a recon. You may find that they won't give you the exchange credit for this one, though.

Seems like only option if i can't get a fabricator to weld and drill

They aren't cheap at £300 a caliper ( second hand) or £1000 brand new

It is for 350mm disc brembo!

Perhaps you should have thought of that before embarking on this modification route? You've spent strong money on a pair of used calipers which turn out to be fairly shagged, and now you're complaining that it'll be even stronger money to get usable ones.

I very much doubt it'll cost £700 to get one caliper rebuilt, though. Talk to somebody like BigRedd.

When people say rebuild, they are normally refering to seal kit

That is done but my issue is bleeder nipple
