Our frost free fridge/freezer has a small green plastic drain plug - inside to allow water to drain out through a hole in the back fridge panel
Should the plug be left out all of the time to allow water to drain out ?
If so - what is the point of the plug ?

I believe that the plug you are referring to is the drain hole 'cleaner'.
The hole gets blocked and you use the tool to allow any water to drain away.
But just don't take my word for it, here is Alan from Indesit explaining what you need to do.

Hope this helps.0
