singlestep, lots of people my age talk about the skills they learned from their parents - I was taught absolutely nothing by either of them, I taught myself any skill I've wanted, or as an adult gone to evening classes and later done online research. So I absolutely know where you're coming from - keep going! I think its really valuable to look on prepping as getting a valid skills base most of all.

Mila - dogs with nappies! Boggledom, right here, right now :)

And I'm another one going to join zippy's Christmas thread - Christmas will be really different this year, for my brother and sister as well as me, and we're certainly not focussing on bought presents - some ingenuity required :)

I get the impression that with dogs that sort of thing is anxiety

    With cats, it's revenge:rotfl:

Tink it sounds as if you have a lot on your plate. Are there any particular things you do to head off problems before they arise?

Singlestep, It sounds as if you are already more prepared than most of the population. I was never taught anything by my working mother and taught myself to cook sew and decorate. To this day I love getting to a certain level of competence in things and then I get bored. I used to beat myself up about it, being a dilettante and all that, and then I realised that it's the learning process I enjoy and there's nothing wrong with that. So though I don't have a very high level in expertise in anything I can turn my hand to most things .

I find I go in cycles. I often revisit interests I was previously jaded with after a goodish break. I don't think I could ever be a wholehearted follower of Marie Kondo for that reason as once I am bored with something, all the tools and supplies no longer bring me joy. But I know myself well enough by now to know that they will again at some point in time.

You sound exactly like my elder daughter :D Once she has learnt to do something she doesn't want to do it any more. She does still enjoy crochet though, just now and then.

singlestep It sounds as if you are doing brilliantly :T You have my sympathy with the herb-growing though. I've only one window ledge in the house and it faces North, so they don't thrive.

There's a motivational writer called Barbara Sher who calls people like me scanners. I'm a serial specialist apparently as opposed to the type who is immersed in so many things at once they can't finish any of them.

As a prepper I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to have a base to start from in lots of areas. It takes a lot of trial and error to learn how to grow things for example but if you have the basics it could easily mean you can ramp up production without losing a year because you don't have the first clue

I'm thinking anxiety too Mary. She was on the streets and then in a shelter for some time.(they had trouble catching her) She adores my daughter and though she has stayed with us many times and not done this, she is now...or else she has developed a love for peeing on carpet.:naughty:

I've shut off all the carpeted rooms so that now she has a much smaller area and it's mostly tile. Bad dog!

Are grow lights popular in the UK? That might be a herb growing solution.
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

Hmm. Could you get your daughter to do a video of her saying hello to the dog and then play it on a loop on your tv? I know a lot of dogs are fascinated by seeing something they recognise on the screen

Maryb - you seem to function like me. Do you have a link for Barbara Sher?

Mrs MP - is your son doing the NCA? My ds (aka The Grunt) leaves for a residential in Doncaster on Monday then a week after off to Keele uni for a week. Feel as though my last baby is flying the nest.

I'm going to use the time to see how far down I can get the food bill for myself and MrD.
Before I would have said we are prepping for redundancy and reduced income in retirement, now I'm prepping for a new exciting phase in our lives thanks to reading JackieO's posts.:D

Happy to be part of the new thread, sad that some people haven't chosen to join .
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p

This is the book where I came across the concept of scanners. She has written lots more but probably just rehashing the same material
