If we did, we'd probably get one from the local cat shelter. They send people round to make sure the home is suitable for a cat ( Imagine the mortification if you were deemed unsuitable )

As someone who was once deemed "unsuitable" I can tell you I survived by going out and buying a Persian kitten who I then thought was lonely so I bought another :rotfl: Both cats survived with me for over 18 years and were very much loved, happy and healthy and the vets thought it hilarious I had been turned down as 'unsuitable'. The fact that some years later the some place that had turned me down was happy to home a cat with me in a shop I worked it where it would be alone 2 days a week and overnight every night and where it would live on a busy road made their reasoning for deeming me "unsuitable" originally laughable. I declined the cat for the shop saying it was most "unsuitable" and I was appalled with them for even suggesting it - and managing to look suitable horrified!

Good Lord, Watty, they must have been *on* something to deem you unsuitable! I'm not surprised your vet laughed!

Firegirl - I confess, I haven't really shifted from the laptop yet :o one of the emails was work-related and quite tricky, took ages. And its *still* raining here ... I think I need a cuppa tea :D

  • Watty, that's appalling. I'm so sorry that for some peculiar reason you were turned down for giving a loving home to a cat.. I feel very sad both for you and the cats that you would have loved.

I've had to veto a pair of homes (just 2 in about 10) years and I know from other rehoming staff/volunteers that it is a very rare occurrence with them too. Obviously your person was a real jobsworth:mad:

One of the homes I didn't think suitable was very small and chaotic with so many other pets(4 cats, 4 rabbits(and one of them was pregnant), 3 gerbils, 2 dogs, 3 guinea pigs, and 6 children under 8 years old. They all seemed to live indoors and there wasn't room to swing a cat (excuse the pun:o). There didn't seem any set place for the pets to eat or sleep. Some cats were eating off the table and another one off the worktop where the human's food was being prepared. There were all sorts of skirmishes breaking out among the various species even in the short time I was there. One of the cats looked absolutely terrified and stressed by one of the dogs. The rescue cats I work with had all had a bad start in life and needed somewhere a lot calmer and quieter than that, and a safe haven where they could feel secure and wouldn't be competing for space and attention.

The second one was like a photo spread from Homes and Gardens. Room after big room with cream carpets and upholstery, dozens of very expensive fragile-looking things displayed on every surface. They insisted on a kitten, not at all interested in an adult cat with an established docile personality. Anyone who has ever owned a kitten knows that they love to climb and play:j. You can't be watching them every minute of the day anyway (any kittens I had got up to all sorts of mischief:rotfl: but that's what kittens do and we love them for it) and this couple were professional people who were at work all day and out doing a lot of socialising several evenings a week. I just imagined a scene of kittenly destruction of their immaculate home meeting them whenever they came back:eek:. I just can't understand why they wanted any kind of pet never mind a kitten that needed and deserved so much love, attention and time. My conscience made me veto this couple.

Such sensible reasons for veto-ing. I was deemed unsuitable as I worked all day, long hours - and - lived near a busy road. Now, the road I could understand but the pedigree cats I bought never went near the road, they went in the garden when I was about - and - it was fenced to they had the garden to explore and couldn't get out. I am reasonably sure they did not mind me going out to work for the essentials like cat food and litter :) Complete jobsworth and an idiot to boot. Everyone thinks it hilarious I am an unsuitable cat owner :)

  • I'm still feeling sad for you, Watty. I definitely wouldn't have vetoed you:). Most people go to work these days, I used to myself and worked long hours too, but I was at home most evenings (or OH was if I wasn't) and we were usually there most of the time at weekends. Cats like some time to themselves anyway;)

This working couple were workoholics, involved in very long commutes (the husband was out of the home from 6.30 am to about 8.15pm and often went in at weekends too. The wife left with him and wasn't home herself until about 7.30. That's a long time to leave a small kitten home alone:eek:. At weekends they went out visiting friends/family and in the week they often went out for meals on the way home from work to save cooking and so got home very late. They thought it was amusing that they had such a beautiful home and were hardly ever there:eek:

An adult cat would still have lacked the attention it needed but a kitten? No way! They wouldn't even consider a kitten a few months old, it had to be a tiny one just old enough to leave it's mother.

As for roads, I know exactly what you mean. I live in the country where the traffic flow is very sporadic on our narrow and twisty road. There have been so many cat fatalities in our village I suspect because the occasional car is so unexpected and takes the poor things by surprise. I think cats soon have the sense to realise that a busy road spells danger. Cats round here often just sit in the middle of the road having a good wash:eek: Then a motorcyclist or boy-racer comes screaming through. My heart stops whenever I hear one.

There are 2 reasons why I wouldn't have a cat - one being our very large cat hating dog - but - the main one being the country roads as CBC says. We can't fence our garden so a cat would stay in the garden as we could with our town house gardens. I know in time Mr Watty will get a cat - but - the dog is a great deterrent to that for now :)

Morning campers :) I'm back to my usual routine today, and managed to catch up on a little bit of sleep last night, thank heavens. Must also conclude I shouldn't use my kindle in bed :o not just for the light keeping me awake, but the position I'm laying in  must do better :j

I've just done a youtube prize draw survey, and the w/m is on, so thats something. My garden has once again been taken over by the ginger tom who sired Lost Cat's three little kittens, he's sleeping peacefully on the shed roof. Which lost its weatherproofing in a storm a few years ago, and is about to collapse :rotfl: he'll have a shock one day, if I don't take it down soon

    So, today's list is:
    - finalising blog layouts - banner, links, About, that sort of thing :)
    - couple of blog posts up

I'll do easy stuff only today, of the physical stuff - cut grass to collect and bin, arthritis is paining me because I've been chopping stuff up, hey ho.

  • You sound a lot more chipper today, KC. A good night's sleep has obviously restored your joie de vivre:j. Sorry to hear you are in pain though, I hope a less physical day remedies that for you:beer:

I had a day from hell yesterday, well, not a whole day but about 6 hours which was long enough. Not going to bore you all with it except to say it was car-related (again!!!). Worked out OK in the end though, cost me nothing financially and has restored my faith in the great kindness of total strangers:j. Couldn't sleep though after such an ordeal (unusual for me, my Dad used to say I could sleep on a washing line:rotfl:) and have woken up headachey, tired and grumpy. I really feel for those who suffer from insomnia, it must be hell. One poor night has done for me:o
  • Just noticed your sig, KC. Only a year to go!
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D
