Just spoken to Fiat. They have said that I need a new gearbox :( they offered me 50% off of parts and labour, which sounded like a fair deal until I found out that the total cost of the work was £2,000 +VAT!!

Have written to head office to see if anything else can be done. I have been to my local transmission specialist who said that the cost of the work would be around £900 including VAT, so if I am going to pay that much I might as well get it done properly. I don't know how much these things usually cost!

My gearbox went on my Clio 182, a notorious fault. It cost me just over £1,000 to have the gearbox removed, taken to a specialist, rebuilt and re-fit.

I didn't dare ask what a replacement would have been, let alone from Renault.

Thanks - its good to get a general idea of the cost, having no knowledge on this kind of thing whatsoever! Basically I would be paying around £1,000 for a brand new gearbox and for the labour to have it installed.

You'd need to check if its brand new, it will probably a re-manufactured gearbox, which will have been repaired to the original OE spec

  • Gearboxes are very expensive, Fiat gearboxes are like chocolate, Vauxhall use one m32-6 speed and its hopeless, get it repaired from a specialist and get rid of it would be my opinion if it has the m32 gearbox in it. Fiat parts department should be able to tell you the gearbox type. Is it 6 speed?.

Never had a gear box problem in any of the 15 Fiat's i've owned. That includes my 15 year old MK2 Punto HGT which (after 80k) still has the original clutch in it.

  • Hi I am very late coming into this but I can't see how to start a new thread! Did you ever have any luck sorting this out? I have a fiat that hasn't gone since January. We had a a similar problem last Jan when it was only just out of warranty and I didn't pursue getting them to pay. Now my car is completely worthless and I can't even get them to pay for the diagnostics. I am so out of pocket as a direct result and I just can't get them to care! Am hoping you might have advice.

No dealer will pay for diagnostics for a car outside of warranty.

There are plenty of companies who will refurb a gearbox, and depending on whats required, i've seen it cost as little as £200-£300.

Any competent mechanic can take out and refit a gearbox.

Probably a days labour tops each way.
