Given that we maybe entering a period of deflation and we're being told that food is coming down in price, Lynplatinum suggested we track a 'Pauper's Basket'. i.e. some staples that regular people might buy and see if they do come down in price over the coming weeks/months. I'm using online shopping for this as it should be a bit more stable than the variety of sizes of supermarkets out there. I'm also using Tesco. I hope this might be helpful for some people. I know I'd find it interesting.

Indeed it will be interesting to see what is actually going up over the next few weeksI shall watch this space, although I don't often go to tosco's as my local 'metro 'store only stocks branded name stuff and very little value range and the big store about a mile away irritates the life out of me, and I don't need a gym pass as to walk around it all takes a good half an hour as its really huge, but the prices aren't :):) I try to find the best value for cash and often use Aldees for basic .Tomorrow I am going to W8rose as I have a £6.00 off a £30.00 shop plus a £3.00 off lamb so with a bit of luck I should get around £9.00 off a £30.. shop plus a free coffee and newspaper to boot :):)I rarely buy a great deal in there although they do have some good offers at the moment on minced beef plus lamb burgers at 6 for £2.00 which for me would make me three meals with veg to streetch it a bit My eagle eyes will be on the look-out for bargains tomorrow as its my last shop of the month0

Tesco might perhaps not be the most appropriate retailer to track prices on.
Take for example their Value shower gel. I believe it used to be around 25p. Then it went up to something like 28p, then 30p, then it jumped to the current 40p. This is over the past few years I've been buying it.
So, Tesco prices might go down, but at least in some cases it will be because they've increasing prices significantly over the past few years. They will, of course, then be able to say that they're slashing prices.
... until they quietly increase prices again in a year. Alternatively, they might do their thing where they increase prices then do their offer of buy-two-for-slightly-less-but-still-more-expensive-than-everywhere-else. (BTFSLBSMETEE rather than BOGOF)0 -
Hiya dronid. Many thanks for using my idea - I havent got the time to track stuff myself and I shall be very interested to see what happens. I will lurk and occasionally post!
How about adding toilet roll/ bleach (value)/ washing up liq (value?)/ baked beans/ tinned tomatoes/ 500g mince/ 1kg onions

Indeed then we can see how and where the cash is going to.
I have noticed that since Jack Monroe published her book, even Sainsbobs are increasing their prices .
The problem is when ever folk notice how to make the pennies streeeetch by using basic food stuff, the shops because the items become popular immediatly increase the prices.Sainsbobs used to do their basic shampoo and conditioner fairly cheaply, thats been creping up and now its nowhere near the bargain it used to be0 -
Obviously this is not a complete list of the Everyday Value items - just a list I did of some of the things I buy.
Some things are missing from either the first or second list. This means they either weren't in the shop when I checked or I couldn't find them online. Or both!
Hope it is useful.
