Hi everybody!

Basically, after 4 years in the UK, I am going to move in to Spain around mid August and i would need a car to transport everything down there. Specially because i have 4 cats and I prefer travel with them rather than send them through a company. So, the thing is:

I need to buy a car (with a big boot better) and then take an insurance to cover my trip through UK, France and Spain, and then probably sell it over there, or change for a left drive one. I´m thinking in a couple of possibilities as:

- Have a year insurance and after a month finish it, even paying some fee
- Have a insurance by days or weeks (if that really exists...)

What do you think would be the better idea/option?

Thanks a los guys!
Tajo

edit: I just found a insurance4aday web and doesnt look bad... 15days 150£...it´s expensive of course but .. good enough for my objetive, isn´t it?

You can have days, weeks or a months insurance but 30 days at the
day rate maybe more than your yearly premium.

A months insurance maybe as much as your yearly premium.

Only you can find out by doing the comparisons.

Would you know what happen if I take a yearly insurance and then I end it after a month? Should I pay something? Never had a insurance in the UK nor that situation anywhere.

    Thanks btw!

You will have to pay cancellation charges after the month, so enquire about the full cost of cancelling an annual policy after a month before buying it and do the sums.

Bear in mind that should there be any claim made during the month then the whole year's premium would have to be paid

Isn't renting a car better or cheaper, maybe a renter that will let you drop the car off in spain.

Yes that was my first option, one way rent and that´s it, but apparently that option here in the UK is... nearly impossible.

I rang every single rent house I saw on internet and all of them have the policy of "car returned within the UK". So I could go to Spain with the car but I need to come back, neither Gibraltar, just England-Wales-Scotland (as long as they have business in the city chosen).
I guess this is due to the right-hand-drive cars they have, because you actually can do it from France to Spain for example.

The only ones I found was the Van and luttons hire, but it´s minimum 4-5 days and it´s round 500£ only the cost of the rent, so I think for that money (or bit more probably) I can buy a car, pay the insurance, pay the tax, pay the fuel and may sell it when I arrive (hopefully).

If you know some company where I could do that, please let me know :D

    Thanks!

£500 will be a bargain by the time you have bought a car and taxed and insured it etc.
Unless you pickup something cheap here and in demand elsewhere your going to lose far more than £500 in the resale.

Not had insurance? So zero no claims = expensive insurance. Even if your oldish its going to be over £1000.

If you Google Left Hand Drive car specialists you may be able to buy a suitable car in this country and keep it?

    Thanks everyone who answer.
Finally we´re going to rent de big Van and travel all the way, possibly with a ferry up to Caen to save some kilometres.

There are several options but, many things to do and too few time unfortunately.

About Left hand side cars no many options to be honest, maybe with more time it would definitely be a good option, but not in my case.

About day insurance it wasnt that bad, i mean, the car could be insurance for a couple of days and that could be around 50-70 pounds, but you needed to add the european cover which was 100 ish more. Then pay tax in advance, although you get pay back when you write off the car, plus go to see the cars (by bus mainly, so more money and time), the car would be good enough, buy it, and the owner bring the car to your home because i havent got insurance to do it, mmmm, all a bit...bizarre

Other option was get a premium insurance, paying monthly, and then cancell it before 14 days, so they would pay you back verything you paid, less the proportional money of the days they cover you, so it wasnt a bad option, but again... need to fight and if I had a accident I couldnt cancelled till see what happened (possible paid of excess). Even cancell it after the 14 days if wasn´t that expensive to say the truth.

Hire a car in Spain and go back to UK and then back to Spain, or Uk-calais- calais uk- uk calais- calais spain.... finally the price of that was high.

So finally, I think the best option, even not the cheapest, it´s hire a big van with a company which works between UK and Spain, even though I may need to go to a close city to pick the van and leave it a bit far from my city, buy my family can pick me up over there, so no probs.

In resume, thanks everyone to try to help me, you´re suprstars ;)
    Have a nice day!
