  • Appreciate the help and advice.
Cheapest insurance quotes are about 1000 so pretty steep

Depends where you are. My daughter, new driver a couple of years ago was 2k. This is in London though. It will come down quickly as long as you don't have an accident.

Have you tried the young driver specialist quotes? This might reduce it slightly
  • If you buy a car from a dealer, they quite often offer you a "free insurance" thing, where they give you a few days' insurance for free, hoping you'll then continue with their company and they'll trouser a commission. .

Beware. You get home with shiney new car having not got quoted to find that it's ££££££'s

Get quotes before agreeing to buy car.

Get a simple car. i.e. NOT diesel.

Get a popular car i.e. one that back street garages can fix, because there are loads about

The Yaris sounds like a great first car, but what about a mk4 astra - dirt cheap, loads about, and reliable enough. I've just sold a 54 plate 1.6 16V sport with 54K on the clock (and not alot of history) for £750. Just needed a cam belt - which i pointed out to all potential buyers when they phoned. - I was playing roulette with that one to be honest.
Get a giffer spec one, like a 1.4 8V and they are buttons to insure as only old farts buy them.

Used a diesel in my lessons but think I'll be buying petrol so daunted as I know I'll probably stall about 50 times

Lots of good advice so far.

Re: petrol vs diesel - if you were taught to drive properly, then the process is the same. Sadly, too many instructors are lazy gets or simply poorly trained or informed, and teach inappropriately as a result.

As well as having insurance, you need to have car tax. I have no idea on the car tax for a Yaris but you are talking about another £100 to £200, I would imagine.

You need a valid MOT and insurance before you buy the tax. The garage or previous owner should sort the MOT out for you. You need to sort the insurance yourself.

I have not bought a car since the rules changed on car tax, so hopefully somebody here can give you some up to date information.

  • Else, you find somebody else who is insured for "any car" and get them to drive it home for you.

Are you sure about this? I always understood that the car needed to be insured anyway and that the "other" driver had to be insured as well. Happy to be corrected though.

No, you need a valid MOT. Insurance isn't checked at point of purchase and hasn't been for several years, except in NI.

Many policies do require the other vehicle to be insured, but not all. Most will also say 'excludes vehicles owned by, leased or hired to the insured' or similar.

My Direct Line policy documents don't appear to say anything about the other vehicle needing its own insurance policy as far as I can see, and there's nothing on the certificate to suggest it either.

If you want a cheap car to run I'd consider getting a fairly basic model if you can as there is less to go wrong - my little Jazz doesn't have air con or remote locking and is still a nice runner at 8 years old. I wouldn't say there was anything wrong with the Yaris but if you find it just doesn't feel right you could have a look at a Jazz as the reputation for reliability is similar. The Jazz also tends to be a bit of a little old ladies car so again the insurance might be kinder.

I own yaris and it is my first car. Mine is 13 years old. To be honest I find it quite reliable. I've had it for 2.5 years. There is not much to go wrong with it (although I had to transplant the gearbox, so if you are thinking about purchasing one take the person, who knows about car, can pin point strange noises, gearbox was playing up when I bought it, it could be checked on proper test drive).
It has electric power steering and timing chain. Tyres are cheap to replace, because wheels are tiny. Over all I am happy with the car, but I am thinking about replacing it with someting else within next two years because of its age.
£1000 insurance is average quote for small car and main freshly passed driver being 30-40 years old. You can lower the quote by higher excess (mind, that will be deducted in case of any accidents) or adding experienced driver as additional driver (not main driver) to insurance.
  • Yaris is an a good choice but that does not necessarily mean it will be a good car at this price condition is everything, though the yaris does have a good reputation for reliability,

regarding insurance read Martin's car insurance guide, and get some dummy quotes by putting some car registrations plates for similar cars from autotrader in the quotes and you get some estimates for your your insurance price

Also consider a hyundai i10 some of the 09/10 plates with mediumish mileage might be within your price range, reliable, bit more equipment such as air con remote locking, and very cheap to ensure, go for a mid spec comfort model
