    Thanks for ideas.

I did think of the Netherlands for this year (Bosch exhibition) but flights were not cheap for a short trip, and accommodation's not cheap there either.
So I won't be going anywhere this year but am promised a rabbit roasted in garlic.

I'm liking the idea of the Cape, and also NZ.
I had thought of Australia and decided it would be too hot, but I guess NZ would be nice at that time, as would southern South Africa.

Easyjet Gatwick to Amsterdam in April for a three night stay are at about £40.00 each way (roughly). A 50'ish mile train ride to Den Bosch won't be too much.

I've just been looking at this too as the exhibition is very tempting.

I'm 60 later this year & have booked to go to Cuba for my birthday. I've always wanted to go to Havana & decided to visit before all the Yanks get there & spoil it!
Too much of a good thing can be wonderful!

On one significant birthday (think the 'roundy' variety) I hired a public room at our library and had a birthday tea with a raffle for a national charity. it coincided with floods in the centre of town, so memorable for the wrong reasons!!!

The most memorable was spent with a friend on a cruise to the western Med. (My birthday is July) We had a really lovely time, lots to see and do both ashore and on the ship. Cruises aren't cheap but the line I use always give you a birthday cake on your birthday and I have a feeling there might even be a gift for one of those special b'days!

If you want the northern lights then Norway is your best bet. Again that could be a cruise with a line like Hurtigruten which specialises in sailing up and down the Norwegian coast.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything! --
    Many thanks

    Thank you both.
Neither Cuba, nor a cruise, appeals to me - but it's great to have all ideas!

You'd find it warm enough on either Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Neither have big cities, both have beaches if you want a bit of that, both have opportunities for snorkelling etc if that floats your boat.

I'd say Lanzarote has a bit more 'culture': there are several 'Centres' where a chap called Manrique transformed natural features into stunning buildings. Fuerteventura has tried to do similar with historic / traditional / cultural sites.

    I love both!

Have you thought about Thailand? A beautiful country & scores highly on the culture front ( temples everywhere) there is also excellent snorkelling over coral reefs with brightly coloured fish in very warm clear waters.(some of the best in the world!) The people are some of the nicest I have ever met -don't be put off by thinking its just for backpackers doing their year out! You can get reasonably priced flights & hotels are not expensive. One of my favourite places.
I have also been to Iceland & can highly recommend that too - we just went Ryanair & booked our car & hotels on the internet, a much better option than a package as it's not a cheap place to visit! We were very lucky & got to see the Northern lights while we were there - magical!
Personally I wouldn't book anything in the red sea - too many holidays there have been cancelled by the airlines & tour operators because of all the unrest, & who knows where will be next?
I've been to Lanzarote too, it's Ok but not somewhere for a special holiday & I wouldn't rush back! But hey, each to their own - holidays are a personal thing & what one person likes is another's worse nightmare! I'm a hairdresser & spend my life talking about holidays with people! Good luck & have fun planning!

Yes, I might still manage this - managed to find Ryanair flights to Eindhoven, and even a 4* hotel at 220 euros for FOUR nights: just need to get my OH to agree to this instead of a rabbit!

I saw some of those Bosch paintings many years ago in Belgrade, almost by accident, and they were amazing.

That*s for this year though - still thinking about next year.
    I still fancy Iceland.
But package tours to the Red Sea are a fraction of the price - under 500 pounds including flights, and full board in a 4* hotel!
Still, as the foreign office advice says some areas of Egypt are OK and others not, it's no wonder they're not selling...

Yes Egypt is cheap, but then it's not a very safe bet either! I know someone who had their holiday to Sharm cancelled after the Russian plane crash (or shot down!) they then changed it to Hurghada down the coast for January & then that was cancelled too after the hotel shootings! After a lot of faff they ended up in the Canaries & hated it. This is the first time I have every been put of going to places by the troubles, but no way would I go anywhere near there at the moment, it's just not worth it :-(
