Carpet - Best place to buy ?

Any advice on buying carpet on-line (or elsewhere), best places, samples etc. I need about 150m2 so i'm hoping to save a bit of money by buying on-line. I don't need underlay or grippers.

Thanks

You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.
  • I know of a Carpet place in Cheshire where they sell discontinued ranges (from stock) for less than half the normal price!
It all depends where you are in the UK as to whether or not it would prove cost effective. Let me know if you're interested and I'll post the contact details for you.
    Hope this helps

If you are around the M62 area or Pennines, there are still a couple of carpet mills in and around Halifax. I get our carpets from Ladyship Mills on Old Lane in Halifax (01422 341151), who specialise in 80% wool blends, from around £8 a metre, mostly in plain or mottled colours. We had some Axminster-quality in the lounge for £16 a metre. They also arranged fitting. They did give out samples. Given that it is a little mill and you want a large amount, it could be worth rininging them up to see if they can help (assuming you are not local), but I have no idea if they can do mail order or not. They do a lot of bespoke weaving, so it's a possibility they may deliver nationwide.

For underlay, grippers etc, there are a few ebayers doing this, or again, you may be able to pick these up directly from a local wholesaler. We went to Texfelt in Elland. Can't remember exactly how much, but I seem to remember getting grippers for the whole house for the price some carpet places charge for one room, and good-quality underlay for about £30 for a room.

If you are not fortunate enough to live in carpet-valley, it might be worth checking to see if there are any carpet manufacturers in your area, that might deal direct. We did check out some of the retailers on ebay, but having mills nearby, we didn't need to take it much further other than for price comparison, really.

If you do go to a major carpet retailer, you may be better to just get the carpet delivered and arrange local fitting, and get your grippers and underlay somewhere else.

    Good look,

Thanks for the replies. I settled on some Abingdon Stainfree carpet from our local coop. £16 m2 but got 10% discount for large area. Found same carpet on internet later for £13.50 and as the coop pricematch and give an extra 10% off, i ended up paying £12.15 instead of £16 and got free fitting. Just need to finish decorating in 10 days !
