Single? How to money save as a singleton?

I can tell you that not everybody is a couple! Why are there companies specialising in singles holidays or Saga where they go out of their way to advertise "rooms at no single supplement"?

"No single supplement" on Solos Holidays is because they charge as much or more than you would expect to pay for 2 people!

There really does seem an opportunity for major travel companies or hotel chains to clean up by offering more singles places, or just offering one long communal table amongst the normal tables in the dining room where singletons would not be stared at during their evening meal.

I always batch cook then freeze remaining portions, also whoopsie/yellow label shopping, as stated above.

As singles we lose out in many ways.

Costs the same to heat the house as a couple would pay, but when I get to pension age, there will only be one pension coming in, to cover those bills, whereas a couple, has 2 pensions. 2 amounts of winter fuel payments, we'll get just one.

I'm just about to start looking at holidays, and taking one on my own. Going to be a minefield!

I could be wrong, but I thought winter fuel payments were one per household, if two people are claiming then you get half as much per person.

Biggest thing that annoyed me when I was young and single was the "single supplement" in hotels when you got a cramped single room. I could understand it if it were single occupancy of a double room.

One area where you actually do get "no single supplement" is on many of the river cruises. I did a Saga Nile cruise and got a large cabin with 2 huge double beds for the "single" person rate.
Most of these boats seem to have a (small) number of twin cabins set aside for singles. Two people share a cabin for £1000 each - I get the same cabin for £1000 - to myself - great !

An interesting observation when viewed in the context of pensions and annuities.

It's almost guaranteed that ultimately one member of a couple will end up single, if costs only fall by a few percent then half the pension won't be a lot of good.
