Can I divide a Calathea plant?

Last year I bought a calathea plant (long, slender silk-like leaves which are a beautiful purple on the under side). I was led to believe they are quite difficult to look after, so I am really pleased that it is sprouting loads of new shoots. My question is, is it OK to divide the plant and, if so, is there any particular way it should be done?
