I bought a Canon Pixma Mp460 at Xmas (bargain(!)£25 at Argos.

By the time I needed to replace cartridges there had apparently been a software update arranged between Canon and Windows which prevents any cartridges (chipped/unchipped/refilled) being recognised.

I was told by Cartridge World they no longer refill the PG 40/41 (compatibles still widely on sale on the internet) since they are more often than not unusable. (I tried them anyway - its true)

My only option is to buy a Canon product

A replacement set of genuine b/w and colour Canon cartridges in a store is £34.99. I can buy - at at least 2 stores this week (Rayman/Staples) a NEW equivalent printer complete with cartridges for £39.99.

To me this is almost immoral - the throwaway printer?? Companies who promote this with overinflated cartridge prices should be charged massive landfill tax!

Anyway - my recommendation - dont buy!

Its very true - the printer companies put their best technical people on designing the cartridges - in order to devise new ways to stop them being refilled or to stop third party cartridges working! They then heavily subsidise the actual printer and sell it at a low price because they know you'll have to buy lots of over-priced cartridges over the life of the printer.

Personally, I got completely fed up with this and bought a second hand laser printer off eBay for £100'ish. The cartridge does 3,000 pages and costs £35 - I'm still on the first cartridge. Its also a lot faster than most inkjets.

If I ever want colour photos printed, I get it done online - works out cheaper than buying cartridges anyway - and better quality!

    Ahhhh

I bought this very printer on Dabs (£36.42) but I ordered it on the 13/08/08 and the T&C says printers bought between 14th august and 29th september - do you think this means I am out of luck with the £15 or do you think it is still worth ago:confused: - haven't even opened it yet as a present for DH

Just a word of warning - read some of the customer reviews of this printer on the Amazon website itself. Several people are not pleased with the printer's performance, and the problems seem to extend further than to it just being slow.

Although it is cheap, if you need to replace it in 12 months it'd be false economy to buy it. It's a case of getting what you pay for.

Make sure you do decent research, both on the Amazon website and computer-specialist websites, before purchasing.

Firstly thanks, FortyFoot, bought one yesterday.

Secondly, I read the reviews and found that most people are very happy with the machine. I am also quite careful when reading poor reviews of things because I do wonder sometimes whether it is rival brands badmouthing the competition. 'Cos, lets face it, it would be good business sense to do so.

I think it should be a useful little machine, printers are a nightmare to buy, but I hear Canon or Epsom rule so anyone who gets this should be ok, I hope!!

My brother got the mp220, from Argos about 6 months ago and he is well happy with it, reading teh spec it doesn't appear that much better than this, and he paid £60, lol.
  • Try www.inkfactory.co.uk for printer inks which are being advertised for the above printer slightly more cheaply.

  • For Prixma MP210 www.ijtdirect.co.uk has Recycled Black £9.95
    Colour £10.95
I have been using their Recycled cartridges for years for my Epson Stylus PhotoR300.Just as good as originl ones.

  • Be warned the cartridges are seriously expensive. More than the printer! They also last no time at all. I bought mine with the cash back offer last year and regret it.
  • As nobody else is mentioning it, one easy way to save on ink is to change the print settings to fast (ie it prints quicker/uses less ink) etc this makes a big difference to printer thirst. When you get towards the very end of the cartridge you might have to change the settings back to default or high quality to squeeze out every last drop.

Also if you change your settings to double-sided (called duplex I think in the settings) your paper use is halved.

You only need to change these settings once if you set up a new account (can't remember exactly what they call it) within the print settings.

Hope I'm not stating the obvious!
