I'm sure the daughter in question would rather have the actual proposal ring for £1400 than taking it back and getting it for half the price... sentiment had value in my eyes.0

If stores are awkward about doing anything, then an alternative is exploring their refund policy - buy a new discounted product and take the old expensive product back.
But in this case, I would leave well alone and not say anything ever.0 -
