    I'm sure the daughter in question would rather have the actual proposal ring for £1400 than taking it back and getting it for half the price... sentiment had value in my eyes.

    It's always worth asking the jeweller what they can do about it, I've had success in the past.

    The worrying thing is the ring may have been on sale for an inflated price before the sale.

    Why is that worrying....the in law didn't buy it . The purchaser is happy and so is the recipient

    If stores are awkward about doing anything, then an alternative is exploring their refund policy - buy a new discounted product and take the old expensive product back.

    But in this case, I would leave well alone and not say anything ever.
