After a few name changes the firm was bought out by Naspers a South African multinational I would do some reaserch and contact the company to find out what the score is.

You hold shares in a holding company which has debts of c£220m and its main assets have been sold for less than £50m i think you can assume they are now worthless.

Shares only get transferred when there is an all share buy out (or partial cash partial share buy out) never when the firm has gone bust.

Do not get rid of any certs just yet.

Afternoon people, i have just come across this thread as needing to raise some capital and sell my shares in Santander, not knowing anything at all, just wondered if anyone can give me a little guidance, rang their h4lpline and given 2 diff prices on commision and wondering about the spanish witholding tax., I am not a Tax payer. Hello! Couldn't find a proper place to ask this question so decided to go for it here - does anyone have any views on a fast, reliable online (possibly phone too) execution-only broker with good service, good website, good share prices etc for a flat rate of £10 or under? I was thinking about going with TDWaterHouse but have heard some bad reviews about them recently, I also considered X-O.co.uk but they seem a bit too cheap for me to be comfortable with, and again I've seen bad reviews on them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I use Halifax no goo reason but they are 11.95 but often have offers like free buys.

II uses the Halifax platform and is £10 per trade.

I had actually considered II, but didn't realised they used the Halifax platform - are they reliable? Good on share pricing etc?

I've just been using Share.com for a week. It's £7.50 per trade (plus .5% stamp duty on buying), but you can opt for £20 + vat per qtr if you trade a lot. You must work out your best way, but you can change any time. I've found them to have all the info I want, plus I phoned them and got through immediately. So I'm happy so far. I'm new at this as well and some details confuse me. The way I work it is to take the number of shares I buy (say 1000) at 50p = £500 x stamp duty at .5% = £2.50, plus buying AND selling commission, £15.00 =£517.50 that is total cost trading in the shares. Then divide by the number of shares = 51.75p per share. Multiply by the % profit you want to make, say 5%, =51.75 x 5% = 54.34p. You can then watch the price and sell when (if!)it reaches that level, knowing you have taken all costs into account.
