Car insurance has doubled

I have had my car insurance with the company called Fish since 1992. Fish are a company who only insure disabled drivers.
Last year my van insurance was just over £500. I received my renewal last week and they are asking for just over £1000. I did have an accident which required me to involve my insurance company, however, that was nearly 4 years ago.
I'm absolutely astounded, I know that car insurance is increasing, but to simply double what I normally pay is a downright insult.
Obviously, I'm very reluctant to pay I'm going to have to argue with them about it. Does anyone know of any other insurance companies that insure disabled drivers, I would like to have a look around to see if I can find something cheaper if this company will not back down.

You've renewed your insurance with the same company for the last quarter of a century...? Please tell me you've at least shopped around and decided they're definitely the most competitive for you... Run that same comparison again now.
But just because they have been competitive in the past doesn't mean they'll continue to be. Perhaps you are no longer their preferred customer demographic.
If you've just been renewing blindly for 25yrs, as your post seems to suggest, then frankly I'm astonished they haven't taken you for a complete mug before. Or maybe they have.0 -
If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?
I'm wondering if you've just tripped into the next age bracket, and that's part of the increase?0 -
Yes, I've had the same insurance company since 1992. The reason being is because I am a disabled driver and Fish insurance specialise in insurance for disabled drivers. My insurance is always been reasonable as far as I am concerned.
I just don't understand why the insurance has doubled since last year. Obviously, I am not going to accept this offer, is absolutely ridiculous. By the way, I'm 48 years old.
A friend of mine who is also a disabled driver told me this evening that his insurance is around £380 from Direct Line. So tomorrow I will probably give Mr Wolf a ring and see what they offer. Then I will go back to fish and tell them. They say they will match any other insurance quote from another company.0 -
Most insurance companies will insure disabled drivers. Have a look at the comparison sites, where you will find lots. My wife is registered disabled (DVLA aware, no restrictions) and I have never had a problem getting insurance for our vehicles. Looks like Fish have decided you are so loyal they can take advantage. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0

Got a quote for £900 up from £400.
Shopping around I can reduce it by £40.
It's a hard knock life.0 -

But how do you know it is reasonable if you haven't compared it to other insurance companies?. You should always use comparison sites every year when you get your renewal, even if your happy with it!.0 -

I'm disabled, I just follow the MSE website guidelines every year and search. My insurance for TWO cars is less than £380 combined. Actually it was just under £300 for the pair.
Any broker who says they specialise in X,Y or Z are usually more expensive than ones who don't claim to be. Adrian Flux who specialise in performance cars actually wanted over three and a half times what I ended up being insured by Churchill for.0
