Waxed side down - that's the dull side. The unwaxed side is shinier.

    Is it ?!!

I've been putting them on the wrong way for years:rotfl: It's never made the slightest bit of difference, I have had pots of jam and jelly that have been 2-3 years old and no sign of mould or anything else.

I've been and fetched one from the cupboard. If you hold it between thumb and finger and rub, you can feel which side is waxy - that's probably the foolproof way of testing ;) I agree, don't think it makes much difference, but the recommendation is waxy side down ;)

Although, yes, they should go waxed side down, I don't think it makes a lot of difference.

provided you put the wax disc in the jar immediately, whilst the preserve is still hot, the wax will melt. Then it will cool/harden to form a seal ... which is the intention. The discs are so thin that the wax is going to melt anyway ... the key is to put the disc in whilst the preserve is hot!
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
