I have just discovered that a 60 watt pipe heater with no thermostat has been left switched on in my attic for over a year.

It was under the cold water tank.

I'm with Bulb paying 0.1351p per kWh so has it been costing me £59.19 a year as I have calculated or just £5.91 as my ex says?

    60 Watts per hour = 1.44kWh per day

    13.51p per kWh ( I believe you meant £0.1351 per kWh above)

    1 day = 19.45p per day

    365 days a year = £71.00

    Look on the positive side.... how much more would an emergency plumber visit have cost if you'd forgotten to turn the heater back on before the start of Winter :undecided

    Nothing, the tank was drained but left in the attic when when new heating was installed.

    One of the reasons he is my ex.

    the calculation was wrong, it was done on a 50 watt heater (slip of the finger in excel) but still it is 10 times more than my ex says.

    Yes I know, it was the fact that my ex was insistent that he was right and I was wrong that made me ask.

    its not uncommon for tanks to be left up there.

    Not easy to remove.

    Mind you most people have frost stats so the heaters only come on when cold.
