used car tyre advice .

Can anyone advise on this please .
I went viewing a used car last week at a main dealer .
I picked up straight away that one tyre had significantly less tread depth than the other 3 .
I mentioned this to the salesman and he hummed and arred , said he would look into it .
I'm going picking the car up tomorrow and again mentioned about the tyre today on the phone .
I only just got the reg number today as it's been on a private plate , so I have checked the mot history and it's been mot'd last week and mentions 3 tyre's that are close to the legal limit .
So as I suspected someone has been mixing and matching the tyres and left the best one on the car , whilst putting 3 significantly better ones on .
Am I being unreasonable wanting 4 matching tyres on a 2012 car ?
I would never dream of only changing 3 tyres on a car and leaving one with hardly any tread ?

Unless you made it a condition of purchase that the 4th tyre was changed, you are not in a good bargaining position. They may have changed the tyre, but if not how far into the deal are you? Too far to walk away?

Hi , I have made it clear all along I'm not happy about the tyre , I've paid a small deposit pending the finance approval , which will be finalized tomorrow , it's not the end of the world , but it's the fact that 3 have been changed and the one left that bothers me , if they were for example 3 michelin and 1 pirelli I would not have an issue , but it's the actual tread depth on the one odd tyre that bothers me , I'm just looking for opinions .
It certainly won't be a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned , I just don't really fancy going buying a tyre the same day I pick the car up , out of principle .

depends on the price, if its main dealer top £ then I would hope they would stick a tyre on, if its from a used car specialist and at a reasonable price then I'd just price up a tyre myself at Camskill or black circles and see what they cost.
  • If it's legal, I doubt there is much you can do unless you're buying it Used Approved from a main dealer where they have their own PDI checks and tyres need to be over a certain depth to be sold under such a scheme.

Then the logical thing would have been to negotiate on the issue before concluding a deal.
The three tyres that were mentioned as close to the limit in the MOT advisory have been changed - why would they change the fourth if it was deemed to be ok?
If you really want the car and it bothers you that much, suggest you fork out for another new tyre - what's the spare like BTW? The other option is to say that you've changed your mind, walk away and lose your deposit.

It has been pdi checked so I've been told , The sales guy seems a bit sketchy on details so I think he may just be busy and someone else is handling it , it is a main dealer , ( Renault ) but the car is a toyota.

It's not badly priced , but I expect a bit better from a main dealer , it's not like I'm buying from Arthur Daley .
It's not the end of the world either way .

It's the fact it's been a grey area , as in the salesman stating - that's strange for one tyre to be worn more than the others , and then it's taken me digging to find the reason , that has miffed me a bit .

I'm sorry to say that saying you're not happy with the tyre, but agreeing to buy it without making a condition of sale that it was changed means you have accepted the car as it is. Only if the "rogue" tyre was below min. legal tread depth or had perished walls or was an "out of time" tyre could you force them to change it.

My info may be way, way out of date, but I always understood that with Michelins you should do all 4 or nothing. I'm happy to be corrected if this is wrong.

I do agree with you and had I been buying that car it would have been "No new tyre (or compensatory price reduction) no sale!"
