I called a local number and spoke to a district nurse inside the building but she said there was no alternative to the 0844 number for calling the surgery. She aplogised but did not know how much it cast to call the surgery on the 0844 number.
Well, the Practice Manager will - and how much cut the surgery is taking.

It'll be 5p per minute to you (the patient who has already paid for the NHS - and each GP's £100,000+ salary - through your taxes).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Dont forget the 'NORMAL' cost to a standard number is 4ppm plus a 7p connection charge

Not for those on inclusive calls packages or who use 1899, 18866 or 18185,

They seem to have hidden the costs again. The link above no longer works.

I have just been reading this thread. The company I use is excellent with some international calls costing 1p per minute - 4p to Australia. They have a great package whereby you pay £10.50 for line rental with free calls at weekend and evenings. I should be getting totally free calls from AOL but they can't get their act together so I have gone back to Primus. I have asked them what 0844 numbers cost but in the meantime here is their link:

If you mean my link to the BT Specialised Numbers Price List in post #3 above from 26-9-2007, it was out of date.

I have replaced it now with the current (November 2008) version.

Many people on here use Primus, usually Primus Saver.

It's also recommended not to move line rental away from BT as only BT are forced to allow you to use cheap call providers, others can and do block access.

It's possible to call Australia landline for 0.5p per minute, making the 4p/min 8 times more expensive.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
  • If you get free calls, try a site called "say no to 0870" as it sometimes gives an alternative land line number

  • Thanks for those wonderful price lists could it get any simpler LOL
I wanted to check out price now have to pay to ring CAB for an appointment here in Cornwall it is 0844499 4188..so I'm reckoning on that being 'g6' 4.255 -4.894 per minute plus set up charge I guess..here's hoping I don't have to explain my reason for wanting an appointment..before they give me one?
Think I will get back to that next week:rolleyes:

I have not read this thread, but I have news for any Virgin customers. As of June 1st 2009 Virgin has dramatically increased their call charges.

The international call checker prices are drastically increased for Virgin customers

Calls advertised on the call checker will now (probably) be as follows, I say probably because I have only checked all the ones for France.

    You can check yourself here

    Advertised price for
    BT ....................................VIRGIN
    0.5p/min............................9p conn + 3p/min
    1p/min...............................9p conn + 4p/min
    2p/min...............................9p conn + 5p/min
    3p/min...............................9p conn + 6p/min

I'm going to put this as a new thread also, I thought it should be included into this thread as it is relevant.

Virgin customers are now advised to look into the cable rates charged by the likes of
    1899
    18866
    18185
You use a freephone access number for these.
