Dan, I've just looked at this and one bit caught my eye.

If your insurance allows it, driving someone else's car instead of yours can be a way to cut mileage. Check your policy details carefully to find out if you can.

If you have fully comprehensive insurance then sometimes, not often, it includes 'driving other cars' cover. This provides you with third-party cover whilst reducing your mileage and therefore the cost of your own policy. Check with your insurance provider whether you're covered.

This can't be serious advice - drive someone else's car on a TP basis in order to reduce your own mileage?!? The mileage difference and therefore premium reduction, if any, is likely to be minimal relative to the risk you are exposed to.

I think MSE are FSA/FCA registered

my insurances have never auto renewed, but i always stress at the time of taking out new policies not to auto renew.

I guess so but then I would have to speak to a human being. I want to be able to do it when I order online. I work in IT I don't want to speak to people unless I really have to! ;)

I also tried Topcashback.com compare (they have added a compare engine to the site) and with the cashback got £12 cheaper quote.

It shows you the quote and then price with cashback.

So MoneySuperMarket gave asda at £495. TCB gave me ASDA for £482 with cashback (£509 without). So you have to trust that the cashback will come through but it may be worth it.

    Tweak the quote date?

I agree tweak the start date

Did a quote for my son on the moneysupermarket site. Start date today was £895. Start date 4 days time £717.

Phoned the company up about this and they say that the search engines and comparison sites do this kind of thing, but they would accept the lower amount and we did it there and then.... Happy!:D
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!

    DON'T over-estimate your mileage
I obtained a quotation from Direct Line's website specifying "up to 3,000 miles" and then changed this to "up to 5,000 miles" to see what the effect was.

The cost difference was almost £8.50, but not, as you may expect, more. The price is less when specifying the higher mileage and indeed 6,000 miles is the same as 5,000 miles. Even 7,000 miles is about £6.50 less than 3,000 miles.

The only explanation I can think of is that the risk is calculated as being greater due to a significant number of people specifying a far lower mileage than they actually do and therefore apparently having more accidents per mile. Does this sound feasible?

Or people who do very low mileages having proportionately more claims through lack of driving experience

    Hi,

I'm 23, currently living at home with my parents and just recently passed my driving test and am looking to get insured on their car. They're both the main drivers and use the car everyday for work, I'd just be looking to use it on the odd occasion, maybe once a week.

To complicate the issue, I'm only around for a few more months as I'm starting a course abroad in October and so am only looking to be insured until then. Also, they're currently midway through this year's policy (with Tesco) which is due for renewal in November/December. Would I be best off adding myself as a named driver to their current policy, or hunting around the comparison sites looking for a new policy for all three of us?

I was wondering what the best (cheapest) way of going about getting insured is.

I was following the links from MSE and as I am over 50 I went through to Age UK for a quote.
I have been driving for over 30 years, never had any points on my licence and never had an 'at fault' claim, my car is a Volvo S60 so quite a big engine but apart from that nothing too expensive or unique and generally considered to be a safe car.
Quote from my current insurers (Aviva) - £318, best online quote (Various) - £220 less Cashback of around £50 giving an equivalent annual premium of £170.
Age UK quotation £525.09 - Outrageous considering it is supposed to be a specialist for over 50's and I seem to be a perfect proposer, no claims, no points, no special needs & a standard car.
Come on MSE, do you consider it to be a money saving opportunity when you are effectively promoting a company who would be looking at charging me over £300 more than a competitor.

    Well,the car insurance renewel thingy!!
If you were to try everything in the guide (which I have done) with all the comparison sites etc,my day off is gone! (8 hours!) and I have fended off about 15 phone calls from insurers as well.

Now done and instead of £328 got it at £186 for the same cover and £0 voluntary excess, well thats the wifes done, now I have to do mine and NO Admiral are not cheaper for 2 cars, neither are any of the others,so 2 policies and 2 headaches and if I was to invoice myself for time taken,no money saved either!
This money saving thing is ok,but it takes a lot of time!

I FEEL YOU. I am going through a lot of stress about this. let me try and explain the situation. My mum feels she is losing her memory which is great stress for her and myself, and says she cannot cope trying to get it together to arrange a cheaper car insurance. It is due the end of this month, and I am not used to the legal lingo of all this, and feel this pressure not to make a !!!! up for her.
I kind of puts more pressure when I see martin Lewis bragging that his followers have got quotes for an annual years car insurance for £20 odd quid (video from 2009) and this woman who claims following his advice she paid 96 PENCE. I mean that kind of promise is PRESSURE. Especially when you cannot understand all the legal-sounding lingo etc---the phrases they use etc, and HOW to put down info when using the comparison sites

I spent ages on the phone after calling the free number to AVIVA only to be told at the end that their quote was far more than my mum is paying--which is £575.22 PENCE--they wanted £648 QUID!!!!!

I spent ages doing a form in one of the sites martin Lewis recommends--Gocompare. When I clicked the 'get quote' button i get 'THERE IS AN ERROR' and find that all my effort is gone when I tried to click the back-button. Talk about soul destroying. i HATE this:(

So I really need help and support. Whatever Martin is promising doesn't seem to be working for me.

My mum is 81, hand is entitled to 8 years or more no claims bonus. The car is 9 years old Polo 5 seater Volkswagon. It is used for work and social (mum), and I use it once per week (I am unemployed)

I noticed the insurance questions I am coming across are asking for 'excess'. I asked mum if she had had excess before and she says no,. nut that could be her memory. I am sure I have heard Martin say you can get cheaper WITHOUT that...?

But from this brief summary, how do you people here think my mum will fare getting a far cheaper quote than £575 quid??
