  • I promised myself that I would start my new thread today (as we are 5 days in already), but I'm sleepy so will keep it short.

We moved home in November. Our previous 5 year fix (which we ported) has now come to an end. Therefore, we now have our new mortgage started from 1st January. Great time to start I think, very neat and tidy indeed.

    The financials:
    Property Value = £178,000
    Mortgage Amount = £151.000
    84.83% LTV
    25 years
    5 Year Fix
    2.39%
    £669.07 per month

    Today I have:
    Done 8 hours at work.
    Researched cryptocurrencies with my DH.
Got DH to open us a cryptocurrency wallet.
Been waiting two days for an agency to call me about a job I applied for.
Started a new food diary on MFP - 9lb to lose as a shorter term goal.
Received an e-mail from the company I purchased most of my Christmas presents from and didn't receive due to a damaged parcel - Ordered 22.12 - no refund yet - not recieved back into warehouse yet.
    Started my new MSE thread.

    Congrats on the new diary

You're braver than me regarding the cryptocurrency - scares me to death! Give me a brew and a OnePoll survey for some extra cash, anyday!
  • New diary - love seeing them at the start.

You said to ask questions, so I'm going to...

Did you save a 'moving fees' pot? If so, how much was in it? Was it enough? If you didn't how much did it 'cost' to move?

We're hoping to move late this year, or 2019, but I want a 'moving fund pot' I'm thinking £10k but have no idea if that's realistic or not.

    Many thanks
    Wish.

  • Good luck!

One of my bigger regrets is not investing in bitcoin when I had the chance. It appeared when I had a lot of spare cash, I was idealogically supportive of the idea, particularly as I can't stand fractional reserver banking and fiat currencies. For some reason, I didn't pull the trigger at the time...

Hi everyone! Wow you do all know how to make an elephant feel welcome. Thanks!

Re. Cryptocurrency - We were aware of bitcoin quite a few years ago. We really wanted to invest but were in a bit of debt and had other things to save for at the time. No regrets though but, I'm not missing out on what I think will be the next best thing now I have a few hundred £s saved. If I'm buying magic beans then so be it. We are looking at it as a 10 year investment. If in 10 years we have lost £400 we won't regret it. If its worth £100,000 in 5 years I think we'd be cashing it out!

WishingTMA - Everyones pot will be different. Mine was budgeted at £580 - £200 Van & £380 survey.
It ended up being £80 van £380 survey & £600 drainage survey. All other fees were paid from the sale of our house. We made £21000 on the house in 5 years. Left £9000 of that in, agents fees were about £2000. We took £9,650 out whch has almost gone - £3000 4x4 which is necessary where we are, £2800 log burner, £2000ish on paint, plastering, greenhouse, tractor, ladders, misc. The rest is saved for the dodgy roof which we have been quoted for. We have only almost finished decorating one room so far so all others will be on a month by month basis from wages. The house was built 1902 and the previous owners were elderly and have neglected it the past few years so most things need doing.

  • Thank you for such a comprehensive reply. We'd be looking to save the equivalent of the estate agents fees as well as the surveys and removal costs in our moving 'pot' even if we physically pay the money from the house equity, I'd like to have it covered elsewhere

    Angain, thank you

  • Wish - There are also conveyancing fees to consider of course. I don't know how much these are as we got mates rates (searches only which were £400).

  • Today I have mostly been scraping paint off badly painted kitchen tiles. Very MSE -no new tiles for me.

I have also read Wish's diary and thanks to her (and google) I have learnt about bullet journals which I had never heard of before. So tomorrow I'm going to dig out a pretty notebook from my unpacked boxes and get planning.
