    great tips thanks Megan, just back from a four day trip and used many of these which weren't included in the plethora of guidebooks we have... my own tips scribbled down as we walked around were as follows

    Google Maps invaluable for finding way round, though get a Three SIM to ensure data connection, we never got the supposed free city wi-fi to connect anywhere. Just click where you want to go and Google guides you to the nearest bus stop and tells you the time of the next bus, brilliant...
    Transport - the Romacard gives unlimited use on buses and the underground, that said we never saw anyone use the ticket machines on buses, if an inspector got on I'm sure 90% would be caught. Underground has barriers, we always found it very busy (packed) so we always prefered buses using Google
    Buy Romapass from Palatine not Colosseum, we got there 9am and the was a huge queue at the Colosseum but nothing at the Palatine booth just 100 yards down the road
    Eats - we just flitted around the streets between Travi Fountain and the Pantheon, loads of walk in restaurants not needing booking. Just beware the 'upselling', the water/brochettes/meat tray/tiramasu/coffees can easily double the cost of the meal
    Three pizzas and a bottle of house white was around £50 including 10% service charge added automatically, no need for separate tip
    Borghese gallary good if you like art galleries, otherwise use Romapass on Coliseum and St Angelo's castle, a real medieval castle with loads of nooks and crannies and fantastic views of the Vatican and city
    Beware the outside table, a smoker will light up when your food arrives
    Take a battery back up pack for your phone
    Terravision bus cheap for return trip to airport but need to print ticket (they need to sort that, even the Vatican allows you to show the barcode on your phone) and bus was 10mins late setting off and arriving
  • Went to Rome for a short break in January 2016 and wished we hadn't. Arrived in plenty of time at the airport for our return journey (Fiumicino) but the mass at Security obviously wasn't going to get through the single checkpoint that was open. There were hundreds of us. The tannoy couldn't be heard above the din everyone was making as they realised they were going to miss their plane. Finally they opened another desk but it was too late for us - our plane had left half an hour before we got through security. As a result we ended up paying for flights on a different airline which went late at night to a different part of the country, then had to get a train at midnight to where our car was at the original airport in the UK, then a long drive home. I got home then drove straight to work. Including having to pay for expensive food and drinks at the airport during the afternoon and evening, we were some £350 out of pocket. Completely spoiled our trip. We sent proof of expenditure and proof of the time we arrived at the airport, to Fiumicino, several times, and each letter was ignored - we contacted other international bodies which we thought might help, plus our MEP, but the airport wasn't replying to them. Finally, they sent us an email in which they simply tried to tell us we were lying. Just wish we'd have taken photos! So if using Fiumicino for your return flight, arrive hours before your flight because their inefficiency cost us more than the original break did.

    An alternative to the Roma Pass is the "Archaeologia Card", which for €23 (adults), or €13 (under 18s), gives entry to:

    * the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum
    * the Baths of Caracalla
    * Villa dei Quintili
    * Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella
    * the four National Roman Museum: Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, Crypta Balbi, Baths of Diocleziano

    for 7 days. No public transport, but Rome's good to walk around anyway. You can buy it from any of those sites, so it's a good idea to buy it from a less-busy site (e.g. the Baths of Diocletian).
  • Just booked the airport transfer online.
    Used Terravision as recommended in the guide - so just an update on price because I think it has gone up slightly, but still much more MSE than a taxi....
    2 people - return - 18EURO. Seems to be 5EURO single now, and they give you a 1EURO discount for booking a return.

    Haven't been yet, but if I find any more tips I'll post them when I get back....

    One tip I would do at the airport is to get a deal of a coffee, bottle of water and pastry for €4 - which they are normally €2-2.50 each. Ir was the one of the bars on the left hand side of the first shops past security.
  • Totally agree with the main article about the water bottle trick. Get a refillable one from poundland and save a fortune!
    No problem taking an empty bottle through airport security & fill on the other side - Ryanair charge €3 for a bottle of water.:eek:
    Also there are fountains everywhere in Rome, definately one near every monument. Although couldn't find one at Ciampino water from the vending machine was half the price of the identical bottle on the plane.

    Pre book the Colloseum online- worth the €2 extra. We went on Thursday with prebooked tickets and almost walked right in!
    Worth spending €5 on the guided tour so you know what you are looling at.

    Have fun :D take a hat and be prepared for the gross toilets even in restaurants.

  • Ooh, nearly forgot - visit the cat sanctuary.
    Buy a gift or donate if you can, or just pet the cats. Nice opposition to all the commercialisation.

  • Going to Rome at the end of September. Can anyone recommend a day tour? Was thinking of doing a full day Rome tour and a half day Vatican tour with overome. Ann's guided tours worth it?
  • No 5 "The Spanish Steps. Head over to one of Rome's most romantic landmarks, the Spanish Steps, in the heart of the historic centre. Read a book, contemplate life or eat a gelato like Audrey Hepburn did there in Roman Holiday."

    I wouldn't advise you eat gelato or eat /drink anything on The Spanish Steps or you will get a heavy fine. Based on a 2012 law, it is illegal to eat and drink on Roman landmarks, which includes The Spanish Steps.
  • 8 of us went to Rome in June and used the Omni Pass, which we bought before we went. We booked all the attractions prior to leaving, including the Borghese Gallery. When we arrived at the Gallery they refused to accept our booking and asked us to pay again. Apparently, Omni haven't been paying the Gallery and so they are refusing to honour any bookings, this has been since the beginning of June 2019. We didn't go in!
