It is entirely possible that I put the side panel on the wrong way - because I had to dismantle the cage to get it into my car. I'll flip it over when I get a chance.

I was wondering about the litter tray - will a rat really use it, rather than doing their business wherever they like?

I'll also take a look at ratrations - I think that's the one the breeder recommended.

And yes, my breeder is on that list, in the South-East England section - I'd rather not name the specific one, but PM me if you're interested.

my daughters rats didn't like an open litter tray - they preferred to toilet in an empty catering can of peas. but, that may be what they brought up to do.
Their food was bought from a local pet shop and whatever they could scrounge/steal when given free run.

They also had a thing about lighters - no guest could leave a lighter around and on one occasion the male was seen nicking my lighter out of my handbag!

Its a good start, but now you need to fill it up. ;)

Young girls will go mad clambering and chasing all over it, so give them lots of levels and different surfaces to work with. Mine always loved the rope perches you can buy for parrots.

    I miss my ratties. :(

One of our girls has a thing about pens! Their cage is next to OH's desk and when they're let out of the cage she runs straight onto the desk and tries to steal his pens :rotfl:

When I lived in a bedsit I would often find my 2 boys running back to their cage with a whole Weetabix each hanging out of their mouths. The !!!!!!s. :D

OP, I use P@H rat nuggets as my 2 tend to leave a lot of the mixed food and only eat the "best" bits. The larger nugget bag is good value for money, as I supplement with some fruits and veggies, and it goes a long way.

Would one of these be big enough to transport 3 young rats:

I've spent £90 today on litter, substrate, food and toys...

As long as they already live together!

Yeah, that'll be fine if its only for a short while, I used to put 4 in one of those.

    Any suggestions for a name?

Hubby wants to call her "Pockets" because that's what she climbed into when he picked her up.

The other two will be called "Snow" (notionally owned by my son) and "Shadow" (notionally owned by my daughter).

I'm collecting them on Monday, and the 15kg bale of Finacard and 15kg of rat food should be delivered to hubby's workplace tomorrow. Hope he's feeling strong...
  • We went with a car theme with our girls (mechanic OH!) so we've had Sky (Skyline), Ascari and Mitsy (Mitsubishi).
If I were you I think I would call that cutie Storm to tie in with the other two names you've already got.

I've kitted out the cage with some more stuff:

I'm having trouble with the door though - it's nearly impossible to open without bending the bars out of shape - any suggestions for what I can do to fix it?
