Hi

Where I live, if you're single and under 35, you are only entitled to the shared accommadation rate (unless you get DLA), is this the same all over the country, or does it differ depending on the council?

The Eastbourne website says "single people under 25 get the shared accommadation rate" - so this means over 25's would get the one room rate yes?

I don't know if it's not been updated or is being misleading or if it is in fact correct.

I'll ring them tomorrow if nobody here can answer, but thought i'd ask :)

It used to be under 25's who got the shared room rate now its anyone under 35 unless you meet certain criteria.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • They haven't updated their website which is rather tardy of them! A mistake like that could mean someone moves into a property and not get the benefit they expected!
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

    NB

It isn't actually the shared room rate, it's the rate for shared accommodation. Although Eastbourne's has got the age threshold wrong, it does at least use the correct term.

it isnt shared room rate, its shared accomodation rate. you will not be expected to share a bedroom with another person.

this applies to all people under 35 across the country.
once you are 35 you are entitled to the 1 bedroom rate

Edited my post, I did mean the shared accommadation rate, not shared room obviously.

Right, so looks like it's an error. Pretty shocking to leave such an error. I've emailed them anyway so hopefully they will now get around to correcting it.

Unless you have social housing and from 16 you get the 1 bed rate. Not fair but its the way it is.

I read that in social housing if you have a kid over 10 and one under they can qualify for a room each?
So 2 adults and 2 kids can have 3 rooms?
With LHA it isn't the same.
  • Do not think that is true now. That used to be the case, but I think that same sex and different sex now have to share until they are 16 now or some such rule. Someone will know more than me though.
