New Iron -help :/

Hi all,
I've just bought a new iron as my exams are now over and I'm spending my spare time making a quilt or my son, the only problem is, the minute I use steam on the iron it deposits white crystals onto the fabric? Any idea what this is and if possible how I can stop it?
Many Thanks
Nikkei

It's probably some sort of residue from the manufacturing process. I'd fill up the reservoir with malt vinegar and use the iron on an old tea-towel or similar until it's empty. Then use as normal. I do this on occasion to descale mine as the water here is hard, hard, hard.0

Our irons deposit white powdery fragments on to the board, and I just assumed it was limescale because we lived in a very hard water area?0

Sorry for the late reply, used the vinegar and it worked a treat! I think the other half nearly died when he knew I'd been ironing
