Credit

Hi,

I'm a full time student with a part time job. I am looking for ways to begin building a credit rating.

What are the best ways?

My students have a credit card which they use occasionally, it is set up to pay any balance in full by the due date with a direct debit payment.

What do you mean by your students? Which credit card should i get? Was looking at a Capital one credit card earlier on but I'm not on the electoral roll, yet..

I managed to get a capital one credit card (I'm a student too), even without a current part time job although I am on the electoral role. Just keep using it and paying it off to avoid high interest payments.

Mobile phone contracts and overdrafts (Interest free if you're at university) will help too :)

lol I guess that could sound misleading, my 'children' who are now students :)

I can't advise you what credit card to get that is down to the individual, all I would say is if you are trying to build up a credit rating (and paying off any balance immediately it is due) it shouldn't really matter too much which one you go for (although you 'may' be able to get one that gives you perks)
If you think you may have difficulty obtaining a credit card because of the electoral roll then maybe you first port of call should be the bank that your student loan goes into(if you have a loan)

I have a student loan and I bank with Halifax? Should I contact them for a credit card instead of getting one from Capital One? Would there be any benefits going with my bank than a capital one account?

I really can't advise you who to apply to for a credit card.
My 'children' ;) applied with the local bank who they have banked with for years(and where their student loan is paid in) I would imagine(but don't know for sure) that the place where you usually bank(student loans etc) probably would be a good place to start as they can easily take a look at your account to see how you have managed your finances to date. jmho

I'll pop into my local bank and get one from them :)
