Wedding Tips start here... 21st Aug 03 at 7:57 PM
Hello All,

As I've mentioned on another board somewhere, I'm just starting to plan my wedding for September 2004 and I'm attempting to do it in money saving style. !I thought I'd share some tips as I go along and (hopefully) learn. !So, here we go:

Firstly, it seems there are a couple of ways of looking at a money saving wedding - either spending as little as possible or getting as much value for money as possible while not cutting back on much. !At the moment I don't know what our final available budget is going to be so I'm considering both ways.

Tip No. 1 - If it doesn't cause too many problems with logistics, etc, holding the wedding on a Friday or Sunday can reduce the cost of the reception (and sometimes ceremony) venue by up to half. !Most other service providers offer discounts for non-Saturday weddings, too.

Hope this will help some people out there. !Watch this space for more. !Any more tips (both money saving and stress reducing!) will be gratefully received. !

Insert from Martin: Two quick things, first of all congrats to Ms. Thrift who started this wonderful discussion so long ago and is now Mrs Thrift.

Second to say, this is such a good chat, and is now so long, I've compiled the info into a MoneySaving article here.

Does any one know where I can get some party invites? I am getting married abroad in St Lucia Sep 2007 and am having a party back here afterwards and am after some beach or tropical looking party invites.
I have looked on the web but haven't come across anything suitable

Can anyone recommend a photographer in the South Wales area? I'm getting married on September 22nd this year. My budget is up to £1000. Most of ones I've looked at so far have either been too expensive or booked already.

Thanks,

Have you tried www.blessingphotography.com ?

We've booked with them, they are extremely reasonably priced and break everything down for you so you can completely tailor the package to suit yourself and only pay for what you want. They work nationwide I think, you just pay a fee depending on how far away you are from them, but again this is all broken down and you can see where the charges are coming from.

We are using this guy, very resonably priced and he is a nice guy as well no harm in asking him how much he would charge you. The website is

I know my sister had the exact same problem!! She did manage to get hers from the web and it was a black & white photo of a bride and groom walking along a tropical beach. I have just phoned her and she can't remember the name of the website, however i have just searched in google and this one came up http://www.weddinginvitationuk.co.uk/ProductList.aspx?Cat=10

I will keep looking to see if i can find the one my sis had, she also paid 90 for 80 invites.

Budget Wedding Tips Needed!
Hi,

I'm getting married in September this year and attempting to do it on a 5k budget - most people are sceptical but I reckon we can do it!

We're having the wedding near Skipton in North Yorkshire and would love to hear from anyone who can recommend contacts for any of the following:

- Chair covers hire - I know this sounds like an extravagance but our reception venue has got a red carpet and bright blue chairs so I'm looking for a cheap option to cover them up!

- Harpist to play in the church

- Anywhere to buy cheap materials for making invitations (I live in Birmingham so could get to anywhere in that area of up in North Yorks)

- Florists that are reasonable priced

- Recommendations for wedding dress shops in the Skipton area (Ilkley, Harrogate etc)

Look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks,
Mrs Robinson (to be!)

serious flower saving + kids activities + late nite snack
Hi All,

I got married August 2004 and want to share a a couple of money saving tip with you

1. flowers - cost a fortune!

I married a farmer so a venue was not a problem as we had marquees in one of his farther's field, super location. But as noting is done 'small' in this small community where you know everybody we had 200 guests so needed the space. I had a vision of tonnes of flowers and lavish decorations in boh the church and in the main marquee. We know a florist, which helps, so we got 10% discount. but more importantly we supplied all of the greenery ourselves, which meant that I could get the lavish arrangements I wanted but for half the price. Beware, if you are looking a many or large arrangements the cost of the greenery can often be more than the flowers. this is direct from our friend, the good florist.

2. kids activities. - keep them happy = keep the parents happy

really simple. we spoke to a young couple we know and who like kids. She works in a nursery. We asked if they would run the kids' marquee which we would furnish with little table and chairs (borrowed from our church's sunday school), games, balloons, cushions, sweets etc. The parents were happy in the knowledge that their kids were safely playing under supervision in their own marqee.

3. late night snack - simple and cheap.

We got a lot of thumbs up because we had arranged for bacon butties as a late night snack instead of another buffet. cheap and cheerful and went down a storm!

Good luck all
Farmer's Wife x

Hi Ms Thrift

My tip for flowers is to agree a budget & brief idea of what you require for you & bridesmaids (if you have them) & how many button holes, I felt my florist was trying to con me when she said the price she quoted me was for a 5' 2 bride & she didn't realise I was so tall, the price of my bouquet went up 50! I challenged it & she stuck to the original price, when confirming the details I asked for the roses I wanted (sh ehad originally said they were too expensive) & got everything I had originally wanted for less than florist had previously said, I think they try to get you to agree to a larger budget but make sure you know how much they are charing per button hole etc, when it gets broken down the price seems to lower.

I got married on a Tuesday (as a true money saver, also got a reduced price for the hotel as we were booking so many rooms for people to stay)

I can vouch for Debenhams dresses too!

I trust all money savers are invited (we don't bring presents though - just tips!)

If I think of anything else I will return, I wish you the very best of luck with all your plans

Info for Ingey
Hi Ingey,

I live near Skipton and have recently been looking for the dress of my dreams and thankfully have found it and ordered it this weekend. There are a few local shops to Skipton:

Cinderellas in Skipton - good selection of dresses
Emma Hartley in Colne (bout 10 miles from Skipton) - v nice shop, won best wedding dress shop award in 2006.
Silks Gowns in Barnoldswick (bout 8 miles from Skipton) - this is where I got my dress, very friendly people, not the most luxurious of shops but I won't be wearing the shop on my day will I!!?
Sugared Almonds in Earby (bout 7 miles from Skipton) - again, lovely shop & very friendly staff

I'm getting my flowers from my local florist, Catkins, in Settle. They are very reasonably priced and they've done friends wedding flowers before, which have been lovely.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Hello all - this thread is certainly a whopper!!

Firstly, for larger sizes of shoe - I really don't want this to sounds mean, but there are some shops specifically for tranvestites which sell larger sizes of women's shoes. I have a friend who is 6'2" and size 9/10 and she swears by them as she can NEVER find anything on the high-street and gets fed up of wearing men's shoes all the time. You can try http://www.electriqueboutique.com or just type 'transvestite shoes' into Google to see loads!!

And now a question too - does anyone know of a wedding list service where you can specify items from different retailers? I have found some which use different specified 'suppliers' but none where you can just pick the items and put a link onto a list - am I looking for something which doesn't exist? If so, would anyone out there like to help me leave my job and start running it? ;-)

Thanks in advance!

Thats a US site. Can the UK order from there?

This might be what you are looking for http://www.marriagegiftlist.co.uk/index.htm

I think it allows you to put your own links in so you can technically create a gift list from any combination of places you like online. Your guests then mark off when they've bought it. I don't know what it would be like if two people were buying at the same time....
Anyway, check it out, see if it's what you're after.
Am not witty enough to put something cool and informative here

Travel Vouchers
I would like for guests to contribute towards out honeymoon if they want to, as we will have everything we need house wise and not much left over after the wedding to pay for one ourselves.

Does anyone know a good scheme for travel vouchers, i have had a look at thomas cook..but wondered if anyone had any other ideas?

Thanks

I've spent months looking for a wedding dress I like, then found 4 dresses I loved in Angel Brides in Horsforth (nr Leeds)! I was really impressed with their dress selection (although their prices are not strictly MS!).

As I live in Southampton, it was a bit far to travel up there for the fittings and alterations, so I called some of the stockists in the South, and soon found that they were all competing against each other to offer me the cheapest price. In the end, I ordered my dress from a shop in Croydon, for 875, instead of 1200. I know this is still quite pricey, but I absolutely love it! Anyway, the moral of the story is, when you've found the dress of your dreams, call around a few of the other shops and see if they can offer it to you any cheaper. Worked for me!
