The dreaded HP NC6000 motherboard problem

A friend has asked me to look at her HP NC6000 laptop that will not power up. The problem is intermittent but when it occasionally powers up it then freezes at the log in screen.

I would not attempt the motherboard repair as described in the link.

Are there any other alternatives apart from paying for an expensive repair, a new motherboard (which might also be faulty after a while) or getting a new laptop?

Just had a look on fleabay and the 'good ones' appear to be going for £120. Mind you the ones that say they have the problem are going for about £20!

I just wish I had the confidence of the bloke in the Youtube video with the heat gun:eek:
