Taking a break from payments?

I am currently around £10,000 in debt and at my current rate of repayments i will be debt free in 3 years.
BUT
I am desperate to take a career break in a years time (when i will be 29), i have been working non stop since uni and want to live and work in Japan for 6 months/year before i hit 30.
NOW is there such as thing as payment breaks for loans?, real payment breaks for up to 1 year?
Also a 2nd 1 i have a debt that was deffered in 2001 and finally paid off in 2004. I know these leave your credit history after 6 years, but is it 6 years from date of defferal or date of settlement?
Thanks

Why not repay your debt and go in 3 years? I'm sure Japan won't have changed that much in that time and you'll be able to enjoy it a hell of a lot more knowing your debt isn't waiting for you upon your return.0

Ahhh yes i would love that, but working Visa's are only available for under 30's!0

Do you mean will they suspend interest accruing or are you asking whether they will allow you to stop payments for a year but with interest accruing?
I dont know the answer, i wouild suggest you phone them up and ask...I wont tell them you name at this stage. Anyway I very much doubt that they will allow this.
Why can't ypu continue to pay when you are in Japan..presumably you will earn money there. Also cannot you get extra work now to accelerate the repayments or al least save up a years worth so you can continue to repay the debts.EU tariff on agricultual product 12.2%

ah, yeah, forgot about that. I think Clapton's idea about repaying while on your WHV is a good one... tho may also need to check whether there's a fee for sending money overseas. I would hope not seeing as it's all eletronic transfer but unfortunately banks seem to like sending gold bars cased in lead for OS money transfers which always works out a bit more expensive.
Banks, huh...?
