Tooth Ache

I have a dentist appointment on Friday but my tooth is absolutely killing me! It has snapped in half so I'm having a crown or something. It's really getting me down now...I've tried everything I can think of to just dull the pain slighty but nothing is working. I have all the painkillers I can take today, I washed my mouth out with some numbing mouthwash stuff that I had when I had tonsillitus and I've even tried swilling my mouth with alcohol. :(

Any more ideas I can try before I attempt to pull it out!!?

  • I would avoid swilling with alcohol as it will "chill" the tooth. If its a back tooth maybe you could try holding warm (not hot) salt water in you mouth for 30 seconds or so then spitting out.
I'm sure toothsmith will advise you.

  • a painkiller my lecturer at college recommended for toothache was veganin? Really knocks you out, but takes the edge off it.
  • You could also hold a hot-water bottle to your cheek (I'm the daughter of a dentist and this is what I had to tell people who phoned with toothache - in the days when you did phone your dentist at home!)

Sorry - I hit the thanks instead of 'Quote'!

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, HOLD SOMETHING WARM AGAINST AN ACHING TOOTH!

I can only think your Dad was getting vengance on patients who dared to phone him at home!!

Heat will incubate any bugs involved with the infection and make them 10 times more active. It will also track the infection towards the heat drawing it deeper into your cheek/soft tissues rather than tracking to the surface which it will try to do if 'unaided'.

Rest with your head up (Toothache is always worse if you lie down). Painkillers really don't touch severe toothaches so don't ovedose. Ring up your dentist tomorrow morning, and get seen sooner.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thank you all so much! The salt thing is helping a little. I think I'll just give up on the painkillers now until I'm seen

I would get an emergency appointment if I were you! Sounds awful..

Otherwise get some extra strength painkillers such as co-codamol, I take them for my gall stones and it gets rid of the pain like nothing else. You have to go docs to get the strong ones though, so may be a wait.

On th eplus side, I just had root canal for a broken tooth like yours, I luckily had no pain thought, and the dentist work was also pain free (incase you're worried!).. Good Luck!

Thanks! I think I'll ring them up first thing in the morning :) My little girl is teething at the moment and she seems to be handling that alot better than me with my teeth! Maybe I should stop being a wimp and just think of it as being a case of mind over matter? lol

Yeah, definitely get an earlier appointment. I had to get one when I was on holiday and had "acute pericoronitis"! It was weird seeing another dentist, felt like I was cheating on my regular dentist! :)
