Just wondered if anyone has tried the Fitbug? I really need to get fit and need some help with motivation...thought the Fitbug looked good but want to know what other people think. Thanks.

Hi first78
I guess you need to really want to do the whole fitness thing in the first place before you start thinking about committing yourself financially to this kind of scheme. Have you got any friends or relatives that will get you motivated and get fit too to start off with? I think that sometimes you only need to see some small results that will fuel your motivation and give you further inspiration. Getting and keeping fit can be an expensive business, but it can also cost very little (mostly time and effort). Give us some more info to go on so that we can give you the encouragement that you need, it might be a case of 'been there, done that'. Most importantly, you have to like exercise; that's the key

Lately all I've been eating is junk food...I'm hopelessly addicted and feel ashamed at my total lack of self control. I want to lose 3 stone and can't afford to start Celebrity Slim until January. I have such low self esteem at the moment and just worry that everything is getting out of control. I don't really have anyone to get fit with me and could just really use some help

This is a very low tech suggestion, but have you tried just a basic pedometer? When I knew I needed more exercise but lacked motivation I found it really helped - I would challenge myself to beat the previous days steps and very soon found I was wanting to do more exercise but not needing the record of it. Might be worth a try and you can get one for just a few £s.0

OK, firstly take a step back and ask yourself why you are not eating a more healthy diet, it is comfort eating, have you had a recent upset that has knocked you down a little? Trying to get to the cause of why you feel like you do that makes you indulge in junk food will be the first starting place. You WILL be able to lose the 3 stone that you want to, tell yourself that you deserve this. Have you got any friends that you can talk to to help encourage you? I know there are lots of caring people that visit this board and you will receive more messages of support
You have to start believing in yourself and coming to this board is the first step in the right direction. Try making small changes to start with, make a food diary so that you can see what you are eating (and the amount); this should help you try to stay on the straight and narrow, walk more if you can or just do your housework a bit more vigourously! Hopefully someone will come along with much better advice for you, but take a look in the mirror and tell yourself that you deserve better

Think the other posters above me have said it all very well- its all very well getting the gear to get fit, but its the whole ethos of getting fit/being healthy that needs to exist, or you just end up with a room full of unused exercise 'junk'!
I would really recommend trying to get some moral support- people who are trying th change with you, are you able to get to a local gym? take part in classes? One thing you could try (only if your into it) is to look into yoga- it wont really do very much to keep your heart exercising (for that you need to do cardio- aerobics, spinning, gym work etc) but generally I've noticed people who do yoga are a friendly bunch, meet outside classes for coffee etc, and try to take the yoga ethos seriously- its all about whole foods, taking care of yourself, valusing yourself and respecting you body. It can make you feel so much better to get into that mindset and once your there, easier to maintain. No one is perfect, people slip up, eat junk, miss classes, but its a hell of alot easier to go back to a class when you know your mates are there and theres someone to talk to.
If yogas not your thing, and you really don't feel you want to exercise with other people then at least try to get some moral support with your food- not really because you feel you want to lose weight- if you do, but because healthy food can make such a huge difference to how you feel in your body and so how motivated you are to exercise. Stodgy food and an aerobics class never mix well and then you end up feeling like a failure for not doing what you planned to do....so easy to change with altering what you eat, when you eat and makeing sure you get all your nutrients and vitamins in so your body is working at its peak.0 -
Thank-you for all your ideas and suggestions, it's really good to have people with some constructive ideas and I really appreciate it. I'll have a look at pedometers...do you know where would be a good place to look...I tried argos but they only seem to do one.
My eating junk food is comfort eating but the stupid thing is I comfort eat because I'm unhappy with my weight and how I look...stupid I know as it's only making the problem worse!!
I can't really afford to do classes or join a gym and I also work shifts so that would mean missing a lot of classes. I have a dog though so maybe I could look at building up his walks

Hi
Just checking in to see how you've been getting along? Hope you've put your positive head on and begun to work on some of the suggestions? Hope you're feeling a bit better anyway.0 -
Try sportshops for pedometer - or if you have a new ipod nano theres one on there - honestly you will be so much more motivated.0

Its a shame you can't do any classes- know there are some free yoga classes in most towns or classes in exchange for small favors (nothing bad intended!) like leaflet dropping. Google for more info.
Do you ever get to meet up with any mates? can you rope them into being fitter with you? a problem shared is a problem halved.
Worries me you say you have no time for the gym or classes- you'd still need to make time with the fitbug- unfortunelty even if you splurge a small fortune on one, you'd still need to make time to use it to benefit.
Its getting dark earlier now so be wary of walking out too late, stay in well lit areas, carry an alarm and if possible walk along busy paths in busy hours....you know the drill! Force a mate to join you, power walk it (walk fast and with massive strides) to make a real difference. Weekends can also be great for this.0
