Also the Boots Parenting Club offers triple points for people buying Huggies. Brilliant for Point Tarts like me. It's def worth trying to use restraint when bulk buying on BOGOFs etc as kidsgrow quickly and it can be hard to see when your kid will be the next size!
lol! my husband is flummoxed by them too, he can work a computer but a nappy is too technical.
cheers martin for that list of councils with contact details. i have posted elsewhere that i get £30 cashback from staffordshire council - it was really easy, they sent me a form which the health visitor had to sign to confirm that i was using washables, i sent it in and am waiting for my £30 cheque. my nappies were really cheap from ebay :-)
* posher than pipkin * .... (not really)

Its not fair, my council don't offer any incentive scheme. I wrote to the Councillor who is heading a group to deal with Bradford's excessive landfill, but just got fobbed off.
Anyway, I still love my cloth nappies. I have to say I laugh at all those lugging great big boxes of disposables back from the shops!! I reckon I have saved around £60 odd quid since changing and can't wait to see that figure increase!
Whilst looking to purchase nappies over the next few months in preparation for my little bundle of joy I've created a whole spreadsheet listing the different nappies/wraps/accessories with prices from the different suppliers. My husband thinks I'm insane and starts looking at me like I'm an alien when I mention kissaluvs, fuzzi bunz, ellas house and slinky minkys! It's just a shame you can't see/buy them in the shops.
Sunshine girl, you could see if there is a nappy agent in your area that could come round and show you their collection. If you google nappy agent and where you live, hopefully it will bring up some search results. Alternatively there may be a nappy network locally who have "nappuccinos" where you could meet other like minded people and ask them if they could let you see theirs!
Alley
P.S. Where do you live? If its anywhere near me I would be happy to meet you, though my collection is a bit small considering some people I know!
I've fallen down a hole

Hi ! I have just been on eBay and there are many bargains there, cheapest ones seen so far some new Bambino Mio nappy covers at £9.99 for 4 , I think once you made up your mind on what to choose (easier to write than to do I know !) it is probably the cheapest place where to actually buy them, right jellyhead ?

I have found that it can be pretty tough getting a real bargain (apart from prefolds a la Cotton Bottoms and Bambino Mio) on Ebay. I have to say though that if I were to go for prefolds again, I would stick with Cotton Bottoms as I have heard too many bad things about Bambino Mio wraps not being the most waterproof.
As affordability goes, you just can't beat the good old fashioned terry. Use a nappy nippa and Cotton Bottoms wrap (or other) and they stay leak proof for hours and hours. Plus, they look so cute with their fairy baby bum!
It's been posted else where but at the moment there are huggies pull ups trial packs of 2 for 98 pence, but inside there is a voucher for a £1 off your next purchase, Tesco and Asda both accept these against normal grocery shopping, you do not have to buy the huggies, so basically they are paying you 2 pence to take away the nappies. I have been using this as a way to take advantage points of my boots card and buy normal grocery which I need, ie I used points to buy the trial packs, then open the packets and nip down to the supermarket and spend my vouchers, as I have about £60 worth of points, but don't actually buy much from Boots, except when they are giving it away of course. The Huggies Voucher expire at the end of December so there is plenty of time to spend them. They don't just sell these packs in Boots i've seen them in Sainsburys and other places too.
The Worcestershire scheme is not really good if you have already bought nappies (like I did from ebay) or if you do not buy them from Lollipop. They give £25 off the first purchase of nappies and products and then a further £15 off the next size up if you buy from Lollipop. Apparently you don't have to have the money off the nappies, you can have it off related products like buckets and liners etc.
They also have Nappachinos mornings between 10am and 12noon on the second Tuesday of the month at the Countryside Centre near the council offices and Country Park.
perhaps you could use it for a couple of swim nappies, or some liners? i like my council giving a £30 cheque, it means i can buy my nappies cheap from ebay.
i hate to say it but because my baby is so lardy and has outgrown everything that i thought would last a year at only 9 weeks of age i have probably not saved any money at all by using washables lol!

I'm in Bromsgrove and they don't offer this scheme even though we're in the same county. I'm hoping to get to the Bromsgrove Nappachino morning at some point to try and see some in real life.
I *love* that there's finally an article on reusable nappies on here, to me forking out a fortune every week on Pampers is soooo not money saving!
Just a couple of things though, I personally think the figures quoted on how many nappies you'll need are overstated, I use MotherEase and TotsBots on my daughter and I have a grand total of 6 of each. I do a nappy wash every 2 days, and I have a few terry squares for emergencies but never need them. Zoe's 14 months old and we've been using cloth since she was 2 months old, and we've never needed more than this, but every baby is different I suppose.
I wash our nappies at 40 degrees, only use 60 degrees if they're really horrible, and have never ever used 95 degrees.
Agree about eBay, and you can also pick up second-hand nappies on some forums, I think The Nappy Lady has one, and UK Parents has a good Buy and Sell Nappies forum (I've never felt queasy about buying second hand nappies, although some people might?)

I used flat terrys for my first two, and they had a second life as hand towels - they are a bit threadbare now though after 9 years.
However, unexpectedly we had number 3, now 8 months old. I found the choice of reusables overwhelming - I can see why some people don't bother because it all seems quite confusing.
However I now use a combination of Kissaluvs (gorgeous fleecy nappies), Snugglenaps (shaped terry in white, blue or pink), and Growing Greens made of cotton and hemp. The least absorbant are the Kissaluvs - they probably wouldn't last through the night. The other two both last all night and are excellent.
Wraps - I tried the Totsbots fleece wraps, but I wouldn't use them again, they do tend to "wick". I use Nature Babies and Mother Nature which are adjustable and are both excellent.
I got mine from Kittykins - they were far better than the Nappy Lady, who didn't even bother replying to a query I had. Kittykins despatch the nappies on the day you order, or at the latest the next day. Very quick service.
I know you didn't actually ask for any advice, but thought this might be helpful in making your choice. Also you don't need to soak nappies before washing - stick them in a dry bucket, and when you wash them they will come out completely clean - plus I only wash at 60C and they are stain-free!
Hope all this helps!

Aaaaaargh! I am 18 weeks pregnant, and new to washable nappies. Having read all the links, I am now even more confused! Where do I start, are all these names that are mentioned websites or in the shops? Can anyone give me a basic summary of what the options are? ( I like the idea of the throaway liners) Any advice for a virgin nappy washer would be much appreciated!!!
my boots sells the flushable liners, you can get them from various websites but if you're buying a pack every month or so and don't want to pay postage you can just get them from boots. my boots also sells terry nappies (the square things like tea towels that you fold and pin together), plastic pants (they go over the nappy to stop wee from soaking through onto the clothes) and nappy pins. they also sell nippas, they grip like nappy pins but aren't sharp.
if you want nappies that don't need folding etc. then it's either an all in one (e.g. kushies) which includes the waterproof bit so no need for plastic pants, or a system. bambino mio is a prefold system where you put a pad into a wrap (a wrap is like plastic pants but breathable material, does up using velcro or poppers). totsbots are shaped nappies that do up with velcro, they are a bit like disposables, then you put a wrap over the top, again it's as easy as a disposable. you might not need to change the wrap each time you chane the nappy.
i was confused about it all to begin with, i looked at the bambino mio site, the kushies site and little lab to get an idea of the different types.

Congratulations!
I'm 17 weeks and only just getting my head around the nappy thing!
both good for starters. Try and go to a Nappachino morning in your local area or contact a supplier like www.teamlollipop.co.uk who probably have somone who can do a demo for you.

Huge congrats.
best advice is to wait for baby to be born before you make a final decision. Then I advise seeing a nappy agent or going to a nappicino. Obviously read around now and make a shortlist, but what fits another baby really well and works for the mother may leak to oblivion for you and be a nightmare to maintain.
