Yep. They have a Classic card which is easier to get, if you are worried about being refused credit?

Is this really what it seems??

I've signed up for this and I've had a letter confirming I've signed up for it but also stating I now have some type of identity theft insurance at a charge of 79p / £100 outstanding balance. I've rung up to query this and they are saying I'm not signed up for it, so why does it state my policy started two days ago when I signed up for their FREE service.

I actually don't have any outstanding balance so I won't know whether or not they have signed me up for this insurance but would be interested if anyone else is having a similar issue with them.

No I didn't have that issue.
I wold ask for it in writing that you don't have a policy with them so that you can dipsute it later if necessary.

79p per £100 is also an option with the Amex Platinum Card and that was for if you lost your job etc. they'd help you out with your payments i.e. pay 5% of it for you. I can't remember what it was called, but it wasn't ID Fraud Protection of any kind. So I think it may have been that you signed up for...

I've been looking at the Capital One Cards very carefully. I want the ID Fraud Protection and was keen to get a cashback card with the protection - win, win, two good features in one! HOWEVER, having looked at the website you need 'Excellent' credit ratings for the cards that DO offer FREE cover (which is only 2!!!) and that means having a credit card already, which has at least a £5000 credit limit, that you've had for at least 5 years. The only one that you don't need an Excellent rating for, which DOES offer ID Fraud Protection doesn't say that it's FREE ID Fraud Protection, whereas the others do. SO in short, I don't think you can get FREE cover (as implied by the MSE article) unless you've an Excellent credit rating as described above. If I'm wrong, please advise. I want free cover, but can't if I'm right about the above. It's rather annoying that the non-free cover isn't detailed on the website to explain why it's not free and how much it costs etc. The Capital One website is in fact very lacking in information.

Actually having read the article yet again, I've realised what it is. It's the free ALERT - keyword - service. Not free ID Fraud Protection - if you get done, you're paying for it. However, Capital One does offer the free credit reports (as discussed at the top of this forum) to alert you. Not to protect you. Ah-ah! And THAT is what MSE refers to. In which case the 'any card' comment may well apply because as I said the C.One site is very lacking on info. and does not go into that side of things.

hi Kaite H,

Is sounds like you signed up for payment protection insurance.
Are you sure you signed up for the right thing?

It's not unheard of for companies to put this on people's account and claim they have asked for it.
It's a dirty trick and they hope people won't notice.
My advice is to get something in writing that you aren't signed up if you can.
Otherwise reocrd the name, data and time of the person you spoke and ask them to put a note on your account.

Default Additional cardholders

Hi,

Myself and my partner (as an additional cardholder) have been earning cashback with a capital one card for some time now. I applied for the free Equifax ID fraud alert service after seeing the MSE article. I thought it was worth a try getting my partner (additional cardholder) to sign up for the service....and it seemed to work! Now myself and my partner have the free ID fraud alert service for free. This could be a neat way to get other family members signed up for free without applying for a new credit card.

Thanks MSE.

Cheers,
BrigBrown

It doesn't mention it in the article, but how do you get protection for your partner. Do you simply apply for an additional cardholder and it's done automatically or does my wife need to apply for her own separate card?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi
Can someone advise how you see the free reports it mentions. We signed up and everywhere in the account it seems to want me to pay to do it. Is there a code to input?

I have just done it but not looked at any report, may go and do that shortly.

EDIT:

Done it and viewed/printed report.

Just click the view report text and wait, it takes a while to collect the data.

If on dialup it may be a long time.

Have you tried here

http://www.equifax.co.uk/capitalone/index.html

They ask for card details but it explicity says you won't be charged.
