I have changed a setting on laptop and voip headset wont work

Really hoping someone can help.

I use vista on my laptop and have been happily using a VOIP headset. I have inadvertently chnaged a setting and now when I put headset on my mic does not work. Have tried headset on other PC and its fine. Just not on laptop.

Anyone any ideas, I am desperate as need to use this for work !!!

ok firstly confirm you have a 'conventional' headset with headphone type plugs for the mic and earphones (as opposed to USB -avoid those)

first place to look is control panel > sound and audio device properties (win XP but vista/7 will have something similar in a similar place)

you need to check under the audio tab you have something selected for sound recording: default device (if you have more than one go for one that sounds right or try them all in turn)

you can also open volume properties from there and check record volume is turned up and mute is off.

other than that do you have any 3rd party audio software that might have another set of volume/mute controls?

Finally is there a mic mute switch anywhere on the headset?
