compucreditcheck - is this legal!?

Hi
I signed up for a "free" credit report at compucreditcheck.
They just decided to charge me £79 for a 1 year subscription, but no where in the sign up process was that figure mentioned. In fact the only warning I found of this charge was in their 4,000 words terms and conditions.
Obviously the reason I am writing this is because I did not realise that. I think the fact they are OBVIOUSLY hiding details of the charge is dead cheeky and I have been angered by their lack of transparency. I had no intention to sign up for 1 year.
Do I have any recompense?!

Complain to them and complain to trading standards - http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/I'm not cynical I'm realistic

The sign-up page has a check-box which you must click to confirm you agree with the Terms and Conditions. The details of payments and cancellations are clearly set out in the T&C, and those sections are even in bold type. You did look at the T&C before registering, right?0

How did they get your bank/card details?
If any site asks for bank/card details to get a free anything I walk away!0 -
So - you leave your bank details for something which you havent read? Genius
Within the T&Cs:
Your seven (7) day Free Use Period for the credit report Services begins on the day after successful completion of Registration as described above and ends on the day which is six (6) days later (the “Free Use Period").
You may cancel the Services and this Agreement at any time. To cancel your subscription prior to the end of your Free Use Period and therefore ensure you are not automatically charged for a subscription to CreditGuard™ you must notify us by email to cancellations@compucreditcheck.co.uk to notify us of your cancellation. If we do not receive your notification of cancellation within the Free Use Period you will be charged for a subscription to CreditGuard™ at the current rate, presently £79.95 including VAT for CreditGuard™ MembershipHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Your naivety doesn’t negate fact that companies like this set themselves up knowing full well that they will make money from unsuspecting people and then make it impossible for them to get it back. I highly recommend you contact trading standards asap.
The issue that you will probably face is getting your money back though.
Irrespective of the terms (a judge will look very unfavourably upon this sort of contract, especially if you were able to enter an agreement without being forced to look at (and sign off on) terms), you will probably need to chase this company through the courts to get your money. It will cost you a minimum of £60 to go though the small claims court (Northampton have an online service). And then, even if a judge finds in your favour, it doesn’t mean that you will get your money.
Speak to your local trading standards at the earliest opportunity. Send a cancellation letter and email (their email address is on their website) to their registered address (its a limited company - so this info is available from companies house):
54 Cwrt Nant-y-Felin
Castle View
Caerphilly
CF83 1TP
Keep all correspondence of your dealings with them (phone calls as well) just in case you do end up going to court.
This company also appears to be a prolific advertiser (no doubt to secure as much transient business as possible) – so I would also recommend doping a search on the internet for them and whatever social community they appear on drop a blog / post asking if anyone else has had a similar experience. The more people you find with similar experiences – the stronger your case will be.
Warn as many people as possible of their dubious practices… and, bitter as it is, be thankfull that you haven’t lost more.
NEVER EVER EVER EVER leave credit / debit card details with anyone unless you fully understand why you’re leaving them.0 -
terms are ment to be read, Im sorry but if they were there its your fault for not readingDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0
